Do Local Gender Quotas in Multilevel Democracies Improve the Electability of Women at Higher Tiers? Evidence from a Survey Experiment in North India
Do local gender quotas in multilevel democracies have “spillover effects” for the electability of women at higher tiers? Using a conjoint survey experiment in North India, we assess how exposure to village-level female leaders elected through a gender quota affects voter support for state-level female candidates. Based on prior literature, we develop a “multilevel learning” logic, whereby local gender quota exposure increases support for state-le…
Decarbonizing Agriculture and Beyond: What Is at Stake
This article argues that an effective rethinking of agriculture in the light of the climate emergency should aim to achieve more than decarbonization in agricultural production. The multidimensional ecological crisis precipitated by industrial agriculture can only be addressed through an integrated approach that seeks to restore the ecological balance through sustainable production practices. However, such a programme of reversing the ecological …
Ethnonationalist Gender Norms: How Parties Shape Voter Attitudes toward Female Candidates in India
How do parties in multiethnic societies shape voter attitudes toward female candidates? We address this question, focusing on parties with ideologies that contain ethnonationalist gender norms—patriarchal norms applied to women from an ethnonationalist party's core ethnic constituency. We argue that, while these norms appeal to an ethnonationalist party's base, they also provide informational cues to the party's “non‐core” voters that undermine t…
Being with Donkeys: Insights into the Valuing and Wellbeing of Donkeys in Central Ethiopia
This paper explores the interwoven lives of donkeys and the people who depend on them for their livelihoods in central Ethiopia. Drawing on data from 12 participatory workshops, insights were elicited into the ways human co-workers value and treat their donkey co-workers. Methodologically, Participatory Rural Appraisal ( PRA ) and Appreciative Inquiry ( AI ) techniques were merged to explore the complex and multi-dimensional contributions donkeys…
Electing Women in Ethnically Divided Societies: Candidates, Campaigns, and Intersectionality in Bihar, India
What factors influence women’s political success in ethnically divided societies? Using an original survey experiment in the Indian state of Bihar, supplemented with qualitative interviews, we explore the impact of two factors—intersecting gender and caste identity, and the interaction of campaign appeal with voter experiences of caste discrimination—on women candidates’ success in state-level elections. We find, first, that women voters prefer w…

Updated respiration routines alter spatio-temporal patterns of carbon cycling in a global land surface model
We updated the routines used to estimate leaf maintenance respiration (MR) in the Energy Land Model (ELM) using a comprehensive global respiration data base. The updated algorithm includes a temperature acclimating base rate, an updated instantaneous temperature response, and new plant functional type specific parameters. The updated MR algorithm resulted in a very large increase in global MR of 16.1 Pg (38%), but the signal was not geographicall…

Food, Feed, Fuel: Transforming the Competition for Grains
Critical changes are underway in the domain of grain utilization. With the large-scale diversion of corn for the manufacture of ethanol, the bulk of it in the USA, there has been a transformation of the food–feed competition that emerged in the twentieth century and characterized the world's grain consumption after World War II. Concerns have already been expressed in several quarters regarding the role of corn-based ethanol in the recent food pr…

A new chromophoric low molecular weight (LMW) organic molecule, 1, was synthesized, and it forms gels in various organic solvents including toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene and p-xylene. The resultant gel phase materials exhibit enhanced and red-shifted fluorescence emission in the respective gelling solvents. This gelator molecule is self-assembled using various noncovalent interactions including hydrogen bonding, pi-pi staking and van der Waals inte…
