  • Community norms, peer influence, and women’s digital financial inclusion

Open Access•Rashmi Umesh Arora, Rashmi Arora et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2026•References: 41

We examine how gendered community norms and peer behaviour effect women’s adoption of digital financial services in India. • Results show that peer usage within communities plays a key role in shaping women’s uptake of digital financial services. • Restrictive gender norms, particularly those that limit women’s mobility, substantially reduce the likelihood of adoption. • Financial literacy efforts and mobile access should align with community-bas…

  • Exploring the role of strategic environmental assessment in cultural heritage tourism planning

Urmila Jha‐Thakur, Fatemeh Khosravi et al.•ARTICLE•Impact Assessment and Project…•2021

Sustainability is critical to the delivery of cultural heritage tourism (CHT) since its foundation to attract tourist relies on the preservation of the historic and cultural offerings of the host community. CHT destinations within urban and semi-urban heritage sites in emerging economies find this particularly challenging. To explore this issue and its associated challenges, this paper brings together an interdisciplinary team representing discip…

  • Leading the Fight Against the Pandemic

    Open Access•Garikipati, Supriya Garikipati et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2021•Cited by: 11•References: 6

Since the start of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the relationship between national female leaders and their effectiveness in handling the COVID-crisis has received a lot of media attention. In this paper we scrutinise this association more systematically. We ask if there is a significant and systematic difference by gender of the national leader in the number of COVID-cases and deaths in the first quarter of the pandemic. We also examine diff…

  • Does Foreign Aid Improve Gender Performance in Recipient Countries

Open Access•Ranjula Bali Swain, Garikipati et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2020

An explicit goal of foreign aid is to promote female empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. We investigate if foreign aid achieves this intended goal by examining its impact on gender performance of recipient countries at the country level. Employing structural equation models, our results suggest that aid alone, even when targeted to directly improve gender outcomes, is unlikely to shift systemic inequalities. Aid will need to …

  • Microfinance and Gender

Garikipati, Supriya Garikipati et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

This special collection examines the claim that microfinance promotes gender equality. The focus is on three areas of the debate: first, the question of how successful microfinance has been in empowering women; second, whether and how negative gender discrimination operates within the sector; third, how power relations within and beyond the household shape the context and outcomes of microfinance initiatives. The papers in this collection demonst…

  • The Cost of Empowerment

Garikipati, Supriya Garikipati et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2017

Poor women borrow from multiple sources. This study examines whether the source of debt matters for women’s role in household financial decisions. Drawing on a household survey from rural Tamil Nadu, we categorise women’s loans along the lines of accessibility and formality into ‘planned loans’ and ‘instant loans’. We find that ‘instant loans’ support women’s bargaining power in various types of household financial decisions, whereas ‘planned loa…

  • Microcredit and Women's Empowerment

    Open Access•Garikipati, Supriya Garikipati•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 27

This study examines the impact of microcredit on male and female time use, and draws on this analysis to explore the linkages between credit and women's empowerment. A study of time use can help understand these linkages, because if credit is intended to improve women's livelihoods, it can also be expected to influence the way women allocate their time. Its other advantages are that it does not suffer from much time lag and can be objectively mea…

  • Consulting the Development-Displaced Regarding their Resettlement

    Garikipati, Supriya Garikipati•ARTICLE•Journal of Refugee Studies•2005•References: 4

Involuntary resettlement of people displaced by large dams, as by several other development projects, is largely considered a failure. Increasingly, researchers have shifted focus from trying to improve welfare outcomes for the affected to questioning the involuntariness of resettlement schemes. The idea of voluntary resettlement, under which the displaced are consulted regarding their resettlement, is often suggested as a preferred alternative. …
