  • What Zohran Can Accomplish

    John Mason, J W Mason•ARTICLE•Dissent•2025

When I first heard that Zohran Mamdani was running for mayor last fall, I admit I was skeptical. the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America has an impressive track record of winning legisla-tive races, but the mayor's race was a challenge an order of magnitude larger. And Andrew Cuomo's advantages—in name recognition, in funding, in elite support—seemed almost impossible to overcome

  • “If Keynes Were Alive Today. . .”

    Open Access•Arjun Jayadev, J W Mason•ARTICLE•Review of Radical Political…•2023

James Crotty, who passed away earlier this year, was one of the most important but unheralded heterodox macroeconomists of his generation. In this article, we summarize what we think were some of his signal achievements—a deep synthesis of the insights of Marx and Keynes, an appreciation of the more radical implications of the Keynesian approach, and a passion for teaching relevant ideas. JEL Classification: E12, B14

  • Decomposing India's Trade Ratio

Open Access•Advait Moharir, Arjun Jayadev et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2023•References: 11

External trade balance is a critical constraint in the macroeconomic dynamics of a developing economy. Typically, external adjustment is said to occur through changes in the real exchange rate, and implicitly in the terms of trade. This article decomposes India's merchandise trade ratio into three parts, namely, change in terms of trade, relative expenditure growth and relative import intensity over the period 1980-2021. It finds that terms of tr…

  • The Political Economy of Financialization in the United States, Europe and India

    Open Access•Arjun Jayadev, J W Mason et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 18

The quantitative growth and increased social prominence of financial institutions and markets can be usefully seen in terms of the constraints or ‘discipline’ they impose on other private and public decision makers. The role of finance in allocating real resources may be less important than its role in supporting the claims and authority of wealth‐owners vis‐a‐vis other social actors. This article discusses the political economy of financializati…

  • The Crisis of Neoliberalism, by Gérard Duménil and Dominique Lévy

    Open Access•J W Mason•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2014

In The Crisis of Neoliberalism, Gérard Duménil and Dominque Lévy argue that the global financial and economic crisis should be understood in terms of shifts in the relationship between finance and nonfinancial firms. In modern capitalism, finance is the representative of the capitalist class as a whole vis-à-vis the management of productive enterprises. The current crisis is distinct because it follows a period of intensified financial hegemony. …

  • Some Experimental Observations on Gastro intestinal Lesions in Behaviorally Conditioned Monkeys

    R Porter, R W PORTER et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1958

Eleven of 19 monkeys used in chronic psychological-conditioning experiments developed gastrointestinal disease. Although the program for each animal was different, for the most part experiments were directed toward a study of emotional behavior. Among the lesions found were gastric hemorrhage and erosion, duodenal ulceration, enteric intussusception, and chronic colitis. In a controlled study of a single behavioral procedure (avoidance behavior),…
