  • Re(Valuing) Labor and Globalization: Present Reflections on the Future of Work

    Open Access•Marissa Brookes•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 14

This essay makes a case for integrating an international political economy (IPE) perspective into the field of labor studies to improve current theories of labor politics. I argue that viewing labor studies through an IPE lens means taking real structural barriers to collective action into account while also analyzing how labor is empowered, not just despite macroeconomic constraints, but also sometimes, paradoxically, by such constraints. I furt…

  • Power Resources in Theory and Practice: Where to Go from Here

    Open Access•Marissa Brookes•ARTICLE•Global Labour Journal•2018

As we approach the end of another decade, it feels appropriate to pause and consider how the power resources approach (PRA) has evolved alongside labour's real-life evolution as a strategic actor across a range of economic, institutional and societal contexts. Just as the actual strategies and actions of workers have grown more sophisticated over time, so too has the PRA become more sophisticated, as scholars continue to refine the concepts compr…

  • Explaining Employer Responses to Transnational Labor Activism: Indonesia and Cambodia Compared

    Open Access•Marissa Brookes•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Attempts to expand labor rights are rarely met with automatic acceptance by employers who benefitted from past practices. Workers, thus, sometimes engage in transnational activism in an attempt to secure labor rights on the local or national scale. This article investigates why some employers alter their behavior in response to such activism. I hypothesize that an employer will concede to a transnational labor campaign only when workers fully shi…

  • Labour as a Transnational Actor: Alliances, Activism and the Protection of Labour Rights in the Philippines and Pakistan

    Open Access•Marissa Brookes•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 19

This article highlights how and why the dynamics of transnational labour activism are not fully captured in theories of transnational advocacy networks (TANs). The article develops a new theoretical framework for analysing labour transnationalism that takes into account the unique capacity of workers to physically disrupt production by withdrawing their labour (structural power) and the unique capacity of organized labour to invoke employment rel…

  • Varieties of Power in Transnational Labor Alliances: An Analysis of Workers’ Structural, Institutional, and Coalitional Power in the Global Economy

    Open Access•Marissa Brookes•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2013•Cited by: 24•References: 47

Workers exercise three distinct types of power when they cooperate in transnational campaigns: structural, institutional, and coalitional power. These power types entail the capacity to physically disrupt an employer’s operations, hold an employer accountable through legal or regulatory institutions, and mobilize nonlabor stakeholders to whom the employer must respond. In developing a framework for understanding workers’ power in the global econo…
