Landscape multifunctionality in (and around) the Kafa Biosphere Reserve: A sociocultural and gender perspective
In 2010, UNESCO listed the Kafa Biosphere Reserve (KBR) in southwest Ethiopia based on the concept of landscape multifunctionality and the need to reconcile local community values and needs with conservation pressures. Understanding the role of the local community in traditional resource management has received little attention by researchers however, as most studies focus on the biophysical characteristics of the KBR. In this qualitative study w…
Elements of bureaucracy: Personal reflections on "going with the process" in Ethiopia
Qualitative research is not just the study of words and meaning: researchers should also provide a critical reflection on theoretical or practical problems in the research process. This practical note is a reflexive account of some the author’s personal experiences learning about bureaucratic process in Ethiopia. From opening a bank account as an “authentic” way to access money in 2007, to describing how to get a single document authenticated for…
The Abolition of Man
C.S. Lewis’s 1943 The Abolition of Man is a set of three essays that encapsulate some of the most important elements of good critical thinking. Lewis considers a weighty topic, moral philosophy – and more precisely how we teach it, and where morality comes from. As critics and enthusiasts for Lewis’s work alike have noted, though, he was not a philosopher as such, but a professor of literature. And rather than presenting novel or original ideas, …
Photography, Finitude, and the Human Self through Time
I. Introduction In 1931, Walter Benjamin wrote an explosive little essay on the history of photography. He opened it by citing a nineteenth-century editorial from a German newspaper, which in his view represented the “ludicrous” and “anti-technological” attitude to photography that persisted even in his own day. “To try to capture fleeting images is not just an impossible undertaking,” said the editorial, “the very wish to do such a thing is blas…
Utilisation of maternal health services in Ethiopia: A Key Informant Research Project
This article explores the application of key informant research to examine barriers and facilitators to maternal health services in rural and pastoralist Ethiopia. The key informants were health extension workers (HEWs) who assist women with birth preparedness and facilitate timely referral to health centres for birth. While women encounter many barriers to giving birth in health facilities, where HEWs are supported by their communities and healt…
Making connections in a regional city: Social capital and the primary social contract
Government policy in many countries encourages migration to regional centres to relieve pressure on major cities and to boost economic development. Migrants are more likely to remain in a new location if they have meaningful work and establish social connections there. This article explores how organisations and groups in a regional city provide newcomers with access to social capital resources which migrants can use to forge social connections. …
The Place of Birth in Kafa Zone, Ethiopia
In this qualitative study, I used an ethnographic approach to provide an understanding about the place of birth in rural and semiurban Kafa Zone, Ethiopia. I interviewed women about birth at home and asked what would happen if there were serious problems and a woman was taken to a health facility. The development of health services aimed at reducing maternal mortality implies that the place of birth must change from home to health facility, but t…
Using birthing kits to promote clean birth practices in Ethiopia
n\t\t\t\t\tThis article explores three NGO projects that assemble and distribute clean birthing kits in Ethiopia. It contrasts the government's health strategy that aims to increase skilled birth attendance, with local realities as most women in rural and remote settings give birth at home, often in unhygienic conditions, and without skilled assistance. Many health facilities are also unable to provide hygienic conditions for birthing women. The …
Creation, temporality and the Lord's Supper in Friedrich Schleiermacher's dogmatic theology
Friedrich Schleiermacher's dogmatic project The Christian Faith is shaped by a powerful doctrine of eternal divine creation. Furthermore, it is characterized not only by a sensibility for the historical nature of the theological task but also by an emphasis upon the Incarnation as the temporal fulfilment of God's will. This article seeks to demonstrate how these three points about Schleiermacher's system play out in his depiction of Eucharistic p…
