  • Cost-effectiveness of caesarean sections in a post-conflict environment

    Open Access•Danielle Deboutte, Tim O''Dempsey et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2013•References: 14

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of health services research in an unstable environment during the transition from crisis to development and its importance for future planning. Effectiveness and the cost of caesarean sections (CSs) were investigated in Bunia, a town affected by conflict and insecurity, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2008. The CS rate was 9.7 per cent of expected deliveries. All CSs in the study sample wer…

  • Beyond war

    Gillian Mann•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This paper examines Congolese children's experiences of war and displacement in the context of the material, social, and relational aspects of their lives in Dar es Salaam. It argues that the challenges, privations and indignities of daily life in urban Tanzania were characterised by feelings of loss, deprivation and hardship so intense they were felt by many to be as or more devastating in their brutality than was life in the midst of war. In so…

  • A systematic assessment of the concept and practice of public-private mix for tuberculosis care and control

Open Access•Rasmus Malmborg, Gillian Mann et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2011

PPM has improved case detection and treatment outcomes among patients seeking care with private providers. Evidence on reducing patient costs is inconclusive, and there is scope for increasing equity in access to care by systematically engaging those providers who are the primary agents for poor people seeking health care. Guidelines outlining which types of providers best contribute to achieving the four global objectives, along with the resourc…

  • Finding a Life’ Among Undocumented Congolese Refugee Children in Tanzania

    Open Access•Gillian Mann•ARTICLE•Children & Society•2010

The majority of undocumented Congolese refugee children living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, experience extreme poverty and social exclusion, harassment and discrimination. Their fear of deportation, forcible removal to refugee camps and imprisonment is coupled with a strong feeling that they are unwelcome in Tanzania. These realities require that most children devote a huge amount of their energy to survival, both literally, in terms of physical n…

  • Wakimbizi, wakimbizi

    Gillian Mann•ARTICLE•Environment and Urbanization•2002

This paper draws on interviews and discussions with 40 Congolese refugee boys and girls who live in Dar es Salaam. It describes their lives and the difficulties they face, and discusses the implications of their clandestine existence (since refugees are not meant to live in Dar but to stay in refugee camps). Children have to conceal their identities and often have their mobility restricted by parents for fear that they will be identified as refug…
