Brian Street and the Letter Project
One of the many activities Brian was fond of quoting was the LETTER Project. He referred to it several times in his publications and it was this which caused him to write his book (with Alan Rogers) Adult Literacy and Development: stories from the field (2012). I am therefore glad of an opportunity to record something of this programme for him in this Special Memorial Issue

The homelessness of adult education: Some lessons from the folk development colleges of Tanzania
This paper re-examines the position of the Tanzanian Folk Development Colleges, a national network of adult education institutions, at a time when their long-term financial assistance by the Swedish International Development Agency has come to an end and they are being transferred from the Tanzanian Government Ministry of Community Development to the Vocational Training Department in the Ministry of Education. Two key questions are whether, under…
Second-generation non-formal education and the sustainable development goals: Operationalising the SDGs through community learning centres
This paper argues that Non-formal Education (NFE) has seen a remarkable revival of interest across both developing countries and the more highly developed countries. Among the factors causing this revival is the search for alternative educations to meet the needs of different groups in society. But in the process, NFE has been relocated – not so much as ‘outside’ formal educational institutions but as a different kind of learning programme within…

It argues that people often change their livelihoods, and that each livelihood has literacy practices…
Escaping the slums or changing the slums? Lifelong learning and social transformation 1
This paper looks at the discourse of lifelong learning as it has emerged in many countries (especially Europe) over the last few years, with its concentration first on learning for work and latterly on learning for citizenship .The failure of lifelong learning to pick up on the earlier tradition of adult education is noted and some reasons for this are suggested. The paper argues that a social transformation approach to lifelong learning based on…

Human sociobiology
Sociobiology provides a perspective from which much of human behavior seems to make sense, and we expect that its importance will grow in years to come. We believe, however, that its current development is flawed by several widespread misunderstandings. Like other students of nature, sociobiologists are greatly interested in adaptation, particularly as embodied in W.D. Hamilton's theory of inclusive fitness. However, natural selection produces ad…

Literacy comes second: Working with groups in developing societies
The ¿Literacy comes second¿ model is an experimental approach that may hold greater promise for the future than the traditional literacy classes. The model works with groups that already exist within the community, such as religious groups, groups meeting for business, residents¿ groups (especially in urban areas), local government and political groups. The main characteristic of these groups is that, from the point of view of literacy, they are …
