The Effects of the Timing of Successive Births upon the Social Organization of American Families
A national survey of preschool children is used to investigate the relationship between birth spacing and the household division of labor. Task allocation involving intramural roles such as childcare and household task performance is found to be highly responsive to variation in average interval achieved for households with four or more children.
