  • Labour, leisure and love

Open Access•Tamzin Furtado, Elizabeth Perkins et al.•ARTICLE•Human-Animal Interactions•2026

Background : Livery yards are important in UK equine management, catering for over 60% of the UK’s horses. Decisions made by the managers of livery establishments shape the lives of horses and their owners; livery yard owners and managers (LYO/Ms) are therefore a highly important stakeholder in equine welfare. This study aimed to explore the experiences of LYO/Ms around yard set-up and management, and how yard managers make decisions around horse…

  • Child public health interventions for conflict-affected populations

Open Access•Ayesha Kadir, Sneha Krishnan et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Armed conflict causes pervasive harm to children, and humanitarian responses to support them face significant challenges. This review aims to summarise the evidence on the effectiveness of interventions to treat, protect, and promote child public health in conflict-affected populations. A systematic review was performed, with searches of major databases and the grey literature from 1 January 2012 – 20 February 2025. Included studies provided data…

  • Health risks at work mean risks at home

    Open Access•Sam Mile, Alicia Renedo et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 5

During COVID-19 lockdowns in England, 'key workers' including factory workers, carers and cleaners had to continue to travel to workplaces. Those in key worker jobs were often from more marginalised communities, including migrant workers in precarious employment. Recognising space as materially and socially produced, this qualitative study explores migrant workers' experiences of navigating COVID-19 risks at work and its impacts on their home spa…

  • Hidden in Plain Sight

Open Access•Tamzin Furtado, Elizabeth Perkins et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2021•References: 22

Equine obesity is a major welfare concern in the UK, and the problem is thought to be increasing. Leisure horses are known to be most at risk of obesity, yet despite plenty of conjecture, the reasons for this are unknown. This study, therefore, aimed to establish the social and environmental factors which owners considered might contribute to levels of obesity in leisure horses in order to address the problem. This project used qualitative resear…

  • Cervical screening in Solomon Islands

Jessica R Botfield, Catherine Mcgowan et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2021•References: 16

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in Solomon Islands; no national cervical screening programme currently exists. In 2015 the Solomon Islands Government invited Family Planning Australia to support implementation of a pilot screening programme. Over 4,000 women were screened. Nurses and stakeholders interviewed felt the pilot was in line with the country’s needs. Challenges related to access, timely treatment, and human resources. T…

  • Memory narrations as a source for historical ethnography and the sensorial-affective experience of migration

Open Access•Marija Dalbello, Catherine Mcgowan•CHAPTER•Challenges and Solutions in…•2020

Studying an entire historical migration sensorium using a vast body of oral histories is a new and ground-breaking twist in ethnographic research. This chapter defines historical ethnography as a tool for historical explanation drawing from the traces of the past, while considering how the relationship between the past and these traces is mediated through oral histories as documents and how the description of experience in the first person reflex…

  • Euthanasia in Aged Horses

Thomas W Mcgowan, Thomas Mcgowan et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 29

The human–horse bond is powerful and unique and strengthened with years of ownership. Yet, in aged horses, the decision for euthanasia will be faced at some time by most horse owners. We hypothesized that euthanasia is a difficult and distressing decision for most horse owners, and that the decision will be influenced by the owners' personality, difficulty of euthanasia decision, and experiences of euthanasia, as well as external factors. Horse o…
