  • Research and recovery: Can patient participation in research promote recovery for people with complex post‐traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD

    Open Access•Catherine Matheson, Elizabeth Weightman•ARTICLE•Health Expectations•2021

BACKGROUND: A new diagnosis of complex post-traumatic stress disorder, CPTSD, has been agreed by the World Health Organization, WHO, and evidence is needed for what psychological treatment might be effective, particularly from those with experience of the disorder. We used a novel participatory approach to explore patient views and simultaneously studied the impact on the patient researchers of the research process itself. In this paper, we repor…

  • Alternative, Oral, Poster and Symposia Abstracts for QHR, 2019

Open Access•Cindy Brooks, Catherine Matheson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The health outcomes now achievable for people living with HIV require long-term engagement with treatment and care. This is problematic for a significant minority. Disengagement from HIV services is strongly associated with poor health outcomes and reduced life expectancy. It accounts for a large proportion of avoidable hospital admissions and has considerable public health implications associated with onward transmission. Preventing disengagemen…

  • Community development: Freire and Grameen in the Barrowfield Project, Glasgow, Scotland

    Catherine Matheson, David Matheson•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2008•References: 4

This article is an attempt to examine one of the better-known failures in UK community development – the Barrowfield Project in Glasgow (1986–1996) – and to compare and contrast it with other attempts at community development, especially some associated with the work of Mohammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank, and the legacy of Paulo Freire. We conclude that both Freire and Yunus make assumptions about the pre-existence of community which limit the p…

  • Languages of Scotland: Culture and the classroom

    Catherine Matheson, David Matheson•ARTICLE•Comparative Education•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 1

The indigenous languages of Scotland are in a precarious position faced with the massive presence of English. This essay examines the state and nature of the Scots and Gaelic languages. It places them in their historical context and traces how each has had its heyday in Scotland, in the case of Gaelic to be supplanted by Scots and in the case of Scots to be supplanted by English. Both have become marginalised in Scottish life and in the Scottish …

  • Play and Communicative Processes within Long- and Short-Term Friendship Dyads

Open Access•Carollee Howes, Kristin Droege et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social and Personal…•1994•Cited by: 10•References: 7

Twenty-four dyads of 4-year-old children participated in this study. Six of the dyads were long-term friends (children who had been friends for three years), 12 dyads were short-term friends (friendships formed within the previous 6 months) and six of the dyads were never-friends. Children's joint play and communications were coded from videotapes. Dyads who more often used communicative behaviors to extend and clarify play also more often played…

  • Contextual constraints on the concordance of mother-child and teacher-child relationships

Open Access•Carollee Howes, Catherine C Matheson et al.•ARTICLE•New Directions for Child and…•1992

Ecological-cultural analysis of child care and family settings yields insight into factors affecting concordance of child-adult relationships

  • Sequences in the development of competent play with peers: Social and social pretend play

    Carollee Howes, Catherine C Matheson et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•1992•Cited by: 57•References: 7

In Study 1,48 children participated in a longitudinal study of peer play development, from infancy through preschool. Children developed play forms in the expected sequence and at the expected ages. Children showed stability in both proportion and emergence of complex play. Children's pattern of play form emergence and proportion of time in more complex play forms related to subsequent indexes of social competence. In Study 2, we assessed the pee…
