  • Considering patient perspectives in economic evaluations of health interventions

Open Access•Rui Fu, Vivian Ng et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Current guidelines for evaluating the cost-effectiveness of health interventions commonly recommend the use of a payer and/or a societal perspective. This raises the concern that the resulting reimbursement decision may overlook the full spectrum of impacts and equity considerations. In this paper, we argue that a potential solution is to supplement a societal- or payer-perspective economic evaluation with an additional evaluation accounting for …

  • Engaging Caregivers in Making: The Role of Physical and Social Settings in Museum-Based Making and Tinkering Activities

Susan M Letourneau, Katherine McMillan Culp et al.•ARTICLE•Visitor Studies•2021

Many studies have documented the impact of maker experiences on children’s learning, but few have examined how caregivers participate in maker activities in museums, both as facilitators of their children’s learning and as learners in their own right. This qualitative study involved observations and interviews with 88 caregivers participating in a range of making and tinkering activities at a science museum. Aspects of the physical setting (inclu…

Robyn Eversole, Lea Coates et al.•ARTICLE•Development in Practice•2015•References: 11

Concerns about the decline of rural agricultural communities have recently refocused on new economic opportunities available in regional food production. This article analyses three on-the-ground case studies of rural development projects in Tasmania, Australia that aimed to develop new regional food opportunities. It analyses these projects to identify how local food producers can create viable economic alternatives in rural settings. The projec…

    Open Access•David N Wells, David Wells•ARTICLE•AUMLA-Journal of the Australasian…•2010

In the fifth of his -Western Elegies, written towards the end of his career, the pre-eminent Australian poet A. D. The Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05 has been widely seen as a historical turning-point. For the first time in modern history an Asian nation competed on equal terms with a European country and overturned the prevailing balance of power. Based on a wide range of sources in Russian, Japanese and other languages, this book goes beyond the military and world-political grand narratives to examine the war's social, cultural, literary and intellectual imp…

  • Green politics and environmental ethics: A defence of human welfare ecology

    David A Wells, David Wells•ARTICLE•Australian Journal of Political…•1993•References: 2

A major strand of environmentalist thought identifies the supposedly anthropocentric foundations of Western attitudes to nature as a fundamental cause of the environmental crisis. On the basis of this analysis they suggest that the development and widespread acceptance of a 'biocentric' or 'ecocentric' ethos is a primary requirement for the ultimate development of an ecologically benign society. This view can be questioned for a number of reasons…

    David A Wells, David Wells•ARTICLE•Politics•1988•References: 9

Despite the negative connotations often associated with ‘Social Darwinism’, theorists representing a wide range of political opinion have drawn on Darwinian ideas to support their own positions. An examination of the views of Spencer, Kropotkin and Popper, as representatives of the Right, the Left and the Centre, provides an interesting basis for a consideration of the application of Darwin's thesis to social and political life. Although these th…

Although a familiar figure in the history of ideas, Malthus has been trivialized, misunderstood and ignored, particularly as a political thinker. Yet his most famous work, the Essay on Population, was conceived and gained recognition as a contribution to a passionate political debate. His major feat—the powerful introduction of an ecological viewpoint into political and social theory—was later over-shadowed by the theory of evolution and the even…
