Adventures in the multiverse
This paper explores the experience of a collective of pracademics who work together at the Centre for Human Security and Social Change at La Trobe University. While there is some emerging scholarship on pracademics as individuals, in this paper we seek to fill a gap in the literature related to the collective practice of a pracademic team. Developed through a structured process of reflection and critical engagement with our own practice, we analy…
Evaluating the feasibility of implementing a prescription drug misuse prevention intervention in the community
CPOs have unparalleled access to community events, local institutions, and the general population they serve, thus, they have the potential to be active facilitators in implementing prevention interventions
Whiteness, Religious Diversity and Relational Belonging
OPEN ACCESS CC BY-NC-ND-PAID African communities in Australia reflect the rich cultural and religious diversity of the African continent. Despite their persistence and agency, many members from these communities continue to experience a ‘fractured belonging’ due to persistent issues of racism and exclusion; issues that have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Religious community groups and organizations have long played important roles…
It comes altogether as one
Our findings highlight new potential opportunities and strategies to mitigate risk of HIV transmission during ATIs among key groups historically under-represented in HIV cure research. Findings also underscore the relational aspects of ATI trials. We provide preliminary considerations for planning ATI trials with diverse HIV serodifferent partners. Future studies should continue to explore these issues among other types of partnerships, cultures,…
A Cost and Cost–Threshold Analysis of Implementation of an Evidence-Based Intervention for HIV-Serodiscordant Couples
Evidence Check
Evidence Check, a programme managed by the Sax Institute in Sydney, Australia, assists Australian policy makers to commission quality reviews of research to inform health policy decision making. The programme involves an iterative knowledge brokering process to formulate and refine the scope of and questions for the review. The knowledge brokering process is particularly important to overcome barriers that have traditionally impeded the use of ev…

This paper explores the potential of community development interventions to contribute to improvements in Aboriginal health, the theory underpinning community development interventions, and the methods used to evaluate such interventions. This paper is based on a review of health literature to identify Australian and international examples of interventions utilising a community development approach with a view to directly addressing a health issu…

Cultures of sexual adventurism as markers of HIV seroconversion
A case control analysis within an ongoing cohort study was used to examine differences between seroconverters and men who remained HIV-negative. The cases were interviewed within one to 13 months prior to their seroconversion. Their responses to a structured questionnaire were compared with those of HIV-negative controls drawn from the same time period and from the same longitudinal study, Sydney Men and Sexual Health. Data collected from both ca…
Sexual negotiation in the Aids era
OBJECTIVE: To test the safety of the 'negotiated safety' strategy-the strategy of dispensing with condoms within HIV-seronegative concordant regular sexual relationships under certain conditions. METHOD: Data from recently recruited cohort of homosexually active men (Sydney Men and Sexual Health cohort, n = 1037) are used to revisit negotiated safety. The men were surveyed using a structured questionnaire and questions addressing their sexual rel…
Factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse in gay men's casual partnerships in Sydney, Australia
We assessed the factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse in gay men's casual partnerships, using data from a longitudinal cohort study ongoing since October 1992. Participants were recruited through gay community and a variety of other sources and interviewed for the Sydney Men and Sexual Health study. Of 1,037 interviewees at outset, 834 men had casual partners during the six months prior to interview; 609 had any anal intercourse wi…
