  • The Federal Government and the Harassment of Black Leaders

Open Access•Michèle Wilson, John Lynxwiler•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Studies•1998

Why do people break the rules? A tremendous amount of energy has been expended by citizens and academicians in trying to answer this question. But even a superficial survey of human behavior reveals that we all break rules. Therefore, a more relevant and interesting question is Why, of all of the rule breakers, are some singled out for observation and investigation, being tried, and being officially pronounced as deviant? At root, this question i…

  • Abortion clinic violence as terrorism

    Michèle Wilson, John Lynxwiler•ARTICLE•Terrorism•1988•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Violence against abortion clinics and other activities directed toward patients and staff of abortion facilities have been termed terrorism by the pro‐choice movement. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation denies that these actions are terrorism. Instances of abortion clinic violence for 1982–1987 were examined in order to determine whether there is a correspondence between these incidents and definitions or models of terrorism. It appears…

  • Empathy/Role Taking

Michèle Wilson, Gayle Twilbeck Wykle•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1984

Feminist therapy is directed not only at individual, but also at social change. Because of this dual aim of feminist therapy, the symbolic interactionist perspective, which describes individual initiative as a source of social change, is suggested as a theoretical orientation which can provide a useful model for feminist therapy. More specifically, the empathy/role-taking model for the clienttherapist relationship is outlined here

  • The Intersection of Political Culture and Fiscal Federalism

David Sink, David W Sink et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1983

Political culture and intergovernmental relations together shape specific policy actions of a state government within the constraints of its economic condition. Although financial resources provided a state government strongly influence the level of its policy outputs, the political and administrative dynamics appear to affect the exact nature of that policy. A case study of state block grant implementation in the state of Alabama provides an opp…

  • Folk crime

    Michèle Wilson•ARTICLE•Deviant Behavior•1983•Cited by: 11•References: 11

Folk crimes, offenses that do not impair the public identity of offenders as respectable, law‐abiding citizens, were studied among a group of New England shellfishermen. Through observation, it was discovered that a pattern of mutual accommodation between enforcers and violators distinguishes folk crime from other violations of the same law. The subjective interpretation of the offenses and accommodation as a reaction is based on considerations o…

  • Voodoo Believers

    Michèle Wilson•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1982

Sociology has attempted to affect the therapeutic community in two ways. The first of these consists of our criticisma of both theory and practice because of the degree to which these do not fit the known epidemiology of phenomena known variously as mental illness and personal problems. The second attempt to influence has come from the philosophical stance of sociology: recognition of the relativity of realities. Although this paper addresses the…
