Assessing a Communityʼs Elder Friendliness
The graying of our population has created a need for elder-friendly communities, but this concept has not been consistently defined nor applied in community assessments. Studies of the topic have examined a range of phenomena--physical environments, religious communities, and access to services--in an attempt to develop a comprehensive model for community assessment. This article describes an elder-friendly community model developed by The Advant…
The Student Alcohol Questionnaire
The reliabilities of the Quantity/Frequency Patterns, Problems Resulting from Drinking, Knowledge of Alcohol, and Attitudes Toward Drinking subscales of the Student Alcohol Questionnaire were calculated. The Spearman-Brown reliability coefficients of the subscales were .84, .89, .85, and .27, respectively. Values of Cronbach alpha for the four subscales were .86, .92, .86, and .55, respectively

Drinking Games and Problems Related to Drinking among Moderate and Heavy Drinkers
The playing of drinking games, the quantity-frequency of alcohol consumption, and various problems related to drinking were assessed among a national sample of 3,830 alcohol consuming students from 58 American colleges and universities during the 1990-1991 academic year. Among Light-Moderate drinkers, a significantly higher proportion of students who had played a drinking game experienced 15 of 17 drinking-related problems. On the other hand, amo…
College Students' Drinking Problems
The drinking problems of college students from every state in the continental United States were examined in 1982 (n = 4,405), 1985 (n = 3,453), 1988 (n = 4,343), and 1991 (n = 3,907). Observed were increases in 10 of the 17 problems studied and decreases in four; three of the decreases were in driving-related problems

Reactance Theory
Reactance theory suggests that attempting to prevent alcohol consumption among underage college students will create reactance motivation and lead to increased drinking among such students. Since July of 1987, it has been illegal throughout the USA for those under 21 yr. of age to purchase alcohol. In a national sample of 3,375 college students during the 1987–1988 academic year, significantly more underage students were found to drink. This rela…

Core Literature of the Two Social Psychologies
A comparison is made of the literature cited in common by a sample of sociologically oriented social psychology textbooks and that cited in common by a sample of psychologically oriented social psychology textbooks. Results suggest that, as reflected in these textbooks, sociological social psychology exhibits less agreement upon a core literature, with such literature tending to be older, more provincial, and limited to books

Age-Specific Alcohol Prohibition and College Students' Drinking Problems
Of 4,266 students at 72 USA colleges in 1984–1985, characteristics of subsamples of students from states that had a minimum drinking age of 21 yr. ( N = 1,328) and from those that had a minimum age below 21 yr. ( N = 1,292) were analyzed. The results suggest few differences in drinking problems between students from the two categories of states; however, these few differences favor states with higher drinking ages
College Students' Drinking Problems
The drinking problems of 4,266 students at 72 colleges in 1984–1985 were compared to the drinking problems of 4,885 students at the same colleges in 1982–1983. The data suggest little change in drinking problems over time, except for a decrease in driving after drinking and while driving
College Students' Drinking Attitudes
The drinking attitudes of 1,582 college students at 37 colleges in 1970 were compared to those of 710 students at 14 same or matched institutions in 1982. The results suggest little change in such attitudes over the 12 yr

Dogmatism and Misanthropy
In distinguishing Letween open and closed mindedness, Rokeach (1960, pp. 62-63) assumed that more closed minded individual, the more will world be seen as threatening. He continued that On other hand, world is seen to be a more friendly place by relatively open person. While this distinction has been investigated (Lee & Ehrlich, 1971), belief about others was measured by a set of items which had not been subjected to any tests of validity. In pre…

Anxiety and Dogmatism
Rokeach (1960) has suggested that dogmatism represents a cognitive network of defenses against anxiety. However, this position has been inadequately and inconsisrently supported (Byrne, Blaylock, & Goldberg, 1966; Fillenbaum & Jackman, 1961; Norman, 1966; Rebhun, 1966; Rokeach & Kemp, 1960; Rokeach & Bonier, 1960; Rokeach, Toch, & Rotunan, 1960; Sticht 8: Fox, 1966). The present study tests the hypothesis that anxiety created by situational threa…

Validity Test of the Dogmatism Scale
An analysis of Dogmatism scores among authoritarians of the right and left supports Rokeach's contention that his scale taps general authoritarianism. However, examination of the correlations between the Dogmatism scale and the rightist and leftist authoritarianism subscales does not support the view that authoritarians of the right and the left are equally dogmatic
