Fieldnotes on the Vigilante Movement in Mindanao
Based upon on-site field observations and interviews, this study explores village-level police and vigilante organizations in the Philippines. A typology of social control systems is presented. The varying degrees of group “formality,” “official authority,” and “independence” of several control systems are discussed. Crime and Custom in an Orderly Society
Based on five months of field work in Singapore, this study examines the style of law and order in a densely populated, island city‐state. In addition to providing descriptive accounts of what some now regard as a highly regimented, if not repressive society, the relevance of Singapore to criminological theory is explored. Conceptual Confusion Among Rural Filipinos in Adapting to Modern Procedures of Amicable Settlement
Based upon field trips to the Central Luzon region of the Philippines in 1980 and 1985, an assessment is made of the changing Filipino system of dispute settlement. Various points of conceptual confusion are explored regarding the system of community justice established by Marcos during the martial law period. This study presents ethnographic findings based on fieldwork conducted on the Crow Indian Reservation in Southeast Montana. Special focus is placed on patterns of informal social control which help preserve a condition of communal harmony among reservation Indians. Aspects of kinship obligation, religion, ceremony, and personality are introduced as strategies influencing early socialization and adherence to rules. Off‐reservation problems of assi…

Based on an analysis of statutes from all 50 states, this research addresses questions regarding the extent and style of antismoking laws. Examination is also made of the nature of public settings where smoking is prohibited. From a theoretical perspective, these aims are guided by several postulates outlined in the sociology of law literature.
