  • Real-world Islands in a Social Media Sea: Nationalism and Censorship on Weibo during the 2012 Diaoyu/Senkaku Crisis

    Open Access•Christopher Cairns, Allen Carlson•ARTICLE•The China Quarterly•2016

During August and September 2012, Sino-Japanese conflict over the Diaoyu/Senkaku Islands escalated. Alongside street demonstrations in China, there was an outpouring of public sentiment on China's leading micro-blog, Sina Weibo (微波). Using human and computer-assisted content analysis, we exploit original Weibo data to measure how public sentiment in China fluctuated over the dispute, and ask two questions. First, how cohesive and volatile were on…

  • It Should Not Only Be about Nationalism: China’s Pluralistic National Identity and Its Implications for Chinese Foreign Relations

    Open Access•Allen Carlson•ARTICLE•International Studies•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 10

Over the course of the last decade, students of Chinese foreign relations have engaged in an extended, and often rather breathless, debate over the meaning of China’s changing international profile. The question for all those with an interest in Asian security, and the wider international order, has become: what does China want to do with its new-found power? This article rests upon the conviction that national identity, rather than nationalism a…

  • Internet Resources and the Study of Chinese Foreign Relations: Can Cyberspace Shed New Light on China’s Approach to the World?

Open Access•Allen Carlson, Hong Duan et al.•CHAPTER•Contemporary Chinese Politics•2010

For decades, students of Chinese foreign policy were confronted with a stark dearth of information relating to China's position in the international arena. In the 1960s, Allen Whiting's seminal work, China Crosses the Yalu, while drawing from the author's extensive governmental experience, referenced only a limited pool of official Chinese sources to describe Beijing's stance on the Korean peninsula. In the 1970s, the main source of information f…

  • Moving Beyond Sovereignty? A brief consideration of recent changes in China's approach to international order and the emergence of the tianxia concept

    Allen Carlson•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary China•2010•Cited by: 15

This article examines recent trends in the evolution of elite Chinese foreign policy discussions about the normative organizing principles that should ground contemporary international politics. It finds that a pragmatic emphasis on sovereignty, albeit as a right which is flexible and far from sacrosanct, still maintains a core position within Chinese thinking in this regard. However, at the same time, a surprising reconstitution of an old world …

  • A flawed perspective: The limitations inherent within the study of Chinese nationalism1

    Open Access•Allen Carlson•ARTICLE•Nations and Nationalism•2009•Cited by: 33•References: 20

Is nationalism in China on the rise? Is it making China more combative in the international arena? More fundamentally: Is a focus on nationalism the most effective intellectual framework for understanding how those living within the People's Republic of China (PRC) are defining their position in contemporary world politics? This article briefly answers each of these questions. It argues that, despite forwarding some compelling insights, previous …

This article examines the Chinese approach to territorial sovereignty and border relations during the 1980s and 1990s. It argues that the Chinese position during this period was characterized by a set of striking continuities and subtle changes. More specifically, foreign policy elites in Beijing have consistently worked to stabilize China's boundaries, but have also de-emphasized the use of confrontational claims and increasingly used internatio…

  • On aesthetically appreciating human environments

    Allen Carlson•ARTICLE•Philosophy and Geography•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 6

In this essay I attempt to move the aesthetics of human environments away from what I call the designer landscape approach. This approach to appreciating human environments involves a cluster of ideas and assumptions such as: that human environments are usefully construed as being in general ''deliberately designed'' and worthy of aesthetic consideration only in so far as they are so designed, that human environments are in this way importantly s…

Assessing the prospects for democratization in The People's Republic of China has been a mostly normative exercise over the past 20 years. Newer empirical work has focused on public opinion and the implications for a democratic transition but this literature is still in its infancy. This paper focuses on the distribution of public opinion in Beijing with respect to a direct, close end question about the respondent's most important value. Among th…
