Holism And Compositionality.
A brief acquaintance with the web shows that the terms ‘holism’ and ‘compositionality’ are used in many different fields, both academic and non-academic. And given any two academic fields, it is usually not obvious that the terms mean the same to the practitioners. Even just within philosophy and linguistics it seems that rather different conceptions are in play when we read any two different authors. We start, therefore, with a brief survey of s…

Descriptive Metaphysics, Natural Language Metaphysics, Sapir-Whorf, and All That Stuff
Strawson (1959) described 'descriptive metaphysics', Bach (1986a) described 'natural language metaphysics', Sapir (1929) and Whorf (1940a,b, 1941) describe, well, Sapir-Whorfianism. And there are other views concerning the relation between correct semantic analysis of linguistic phenomena and the "reality" that is supposed to be thereby described. I think some considerations from the analyses of the mass-count distinction can shed some light on t…
Foundations of Intensional Semantics
Representation and Inference for Natural Language
This book introduces fundamental techniques for computing semantic representations for fragments of natural language and performing inference with the result. The prinary tools used are first-order logic and lambda calculus. All the techniques introduced are implemented in Prolog. The book also shown how to use theorem provers and model builders in parallel to deal with natrual language inference

The Principle of Semantic Compositionality
The Principle of Semantic Compositionality is the principle that the meaning of an expression is a function of, and only of, the meanings of its parts together with the method by which those parts are combined. As stated, the Principle is vague or underspecified at a number of points such as “what counts as a part,” “what is a meaning,” “what kind of function is allowed,” and the like. But this hasn’t stopped some people from treating it as an ob…
The Generic Book
This work consists of an introduction and 11 articles on important aspects of the interpretation of generic expressions. The introduction provides a clear overview of various issues and synthesizes the major analytical approaches to them. Taken together, the papers that follow reflect the current state of the art in the semantics of generics, and afford insight into various generic phenomena
Parmenides, Plato and the Semantics of Not-Being

Sameness and Referential Opacity in Aristotle
It is well-known that Aristotle wrote a lot about sameness. It is also widely believed that the concept of sameness in Aristotle underwent drastic revision-from being more-or-less like the modern notion of identity to being something we would not wish to call 'identity' at all.' In the Topics, an early work, we find hints of something we would recognize (although Aristotle is still claimed to have a weak grip on the concept); in Metaphysics V (la…

Incompatibility” in Plato's Sophist
I want to consider a much-disputed reading of a certain critical area of Plato's Sophist . It is widely agreed by most commentators that in this text, between 255E and 259E there occurs a refutation of Parmenides' dictum that “one cannot say that which is not”, and that this is followed by an application of the foregoing discussion to the problems of sentiential falsity. (For a partial list of commentators, see bibliography.) It is also generally…
