Open Access•Catriona Macdonald, Rhys Cooper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2026

The Ascension Island Marine Protected Area (AI-MPA) is one of the largest areas of protected ocean, safeguarding a unique ecosystem in the South Atlantic Ocean. This study presents the first seabed geomorphology, substrate and benthic habitat maps of the AI-MPA, produced using high-resolution bathymetry data acquired by the British Geological Survey, the Royal Navy and the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office. Mapping combined a semi-automated appr…

  • A Romano-British Cist Burial from Marton-Cum-Grafton, near Aldborough, North Yorkshire

    Open Access•Mark Whyman, M R Whyman et al.•ARTICLE•Yorkshire Archaeological Journal•2023

In 2007 an isolated cist burial was discovered on farmland near Marton-cum-Grafton, North-Yorkshire. An archaeological excavation was undertaken by York Archaeological Trust, funded by English Heritage. The excavation revealed a large cut containing a stone cist, within which a wooden lead-lined coffin had been placed. The skeleton within was of a 30-45 year old male. No grave goods were present within the grave. Cist burials of this type are rar…

  • Toward a Harm-Based Account of Microaggressions

    Open Access•Lauren Freeman, Heather Stewart•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2021

In this article, we critique the dominant understanding of microaggressions introduced by Derald Wing Sue and his colleagues—what we call the act-based account of microaggressions—by identifying its theoretical and practical shortcomings. On the basis of this critique, we introduce and defend an alternative, ameliorative account of microaggressions, what we call the harm-based account of microaggressions. Instead of understanding microaggressions…

  • My First Therapy Session

    Heather Stewart•ARTICLE•Academic Medicine•2021

I sat in the waiting room wondering what it was going to be like. Would my therapist be nice? Would she think I did not really need therapy? Would she understand me? Could she help me? To accommodate my clerkship rotation schedule, I was going to an after-hours appointment and was all alone in the waiting room—which was also an accurate depiction of how I felt. I had not heard any of my classmates talk about therapy. They must not need help like …

  • We're Here, We're … Queer? On the Enduring Harms of Bisexual Erasure

    Open Access•Heather Stewart•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2021

This article highlights three epistemic practices, which, taken together, create conditions that worsen the problem of ‘bisexual erasure.’ Though bisexual people constitute a significant portion of the larger LGBTQ+ community, their identities and experiences and routinely erased — in queer communities and broader society alike. This article argues that we have both an epistemic and a moral obligation to attend to the epistemic conditions created…

  • The Capstone Journey: Exploring Design, Delivery and Evaluation in an Undergraduate Management Discipline Context

    Open Access•Heather Stewart, Luke Houghton et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2019•References: 2

The focus of this paper is the development of a capstone management course and the application of educational action research through continual learning. In this article, we use the continual learning frame of plan, do, study, and act to underpin an educational action research design on the development of a capstone management course. As part of an Active Learning Trial, the development of the capstone experience has been captured in the embodime…

  • Exploring the Alchemy of Qualitative Management Research: Seeking Trustworthiness, Credibility and Rigor Through Crystallization

    Open Access•Heather Stewart, Rod Gapp et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 16

In this paper we explore crystallization in terms of its contribution to qualitative management research. This exploration of crystallization is based on a postmodern view where we utilize triangulation as a point of departure. Currently, the use of crystallization is underdeveloped in the management discipline. Qualitative literature and metaphors are utilized to develop a focus on moving qualitative management research away from positivist term…

  • The privilege against self-incrimination: Reconsidering Redmaynes rethinking

    Heather Stewart•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2016•Cited by: 1

In ‘Rethinking the Privilege Against Self-Incrimination’, Mike Redmayne offered an ingenious proposal that both motivated the privilege and explained the difference between statements and other forms of assistance. He connected the privilege with the idea that individual citizens should have space to disassociate themselves from a prosecution, particularly where it would be very costly for them and not particularly helpful to the prosecution, to …

  • Cross-Check for Completeness: Exploring a Novel Use of Leximancer in a Grounded Theory Study

    Open Access•Ian Harwood, Rod Gapp et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This paper investigates the potential for Leximancer software to actively support the Grounded Theory (GT) analyst in assessing the “completeness” of their study. The case study takes an existing GT study and retrospectively analyzes the data with Leximancer. The Leximancer output showed encouraging similarities to the main themes emerging from the GT analysis; but not sufficiently at the selective coding level to justifiably claim a definitive c…

To determine whether the introduction of evidence-based practice for interviewing child witnesses was accompanied by changes in the disposition of cases in which sexual abuse was suspected, we compared cases in which the investigative interviews of 3- to 14-year-old alleged victims were conducted either before (n 350) or after (n 410) investigators had been taught to use the NICHD Protocol. Analyses showed that when charges were filed, both pre-P…

  • Self-esteem, construal, and comparisons with the self, friends, and peers

Jerry Suls, Katherine Lemos et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2002•Cited by: 7•References: 47

Extending the better than average effect, 3 studies examined self-, friend, and peer comparisons of personal attributes. Participants rated themselves as better off than friends, who they rated as superior to generalized peers. The exception was in direct comparisons, where the self and friends were not strongly differentiated on unambiguous negative attributes. Self-esteem and construal played moderating roles, with persons with high self-esteem…

Michael Jackson, Heather Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1987•Cited by: 1

The article reports one aspect of research conducted about a year ago into the operation of tribunals hearing appeals on supplementary benefit matters. Attention is concentrated on the role of tribunal members in the public part of the hearing. It is suggested that while most members contribute during this part of the hearing, such as by questioning appellants, representatives or presenting officers, a minority very rarely do so. It is also sugge…
