How to Save Pascal (and Ourselves) From the Mugger
In this article, we re-examine Pascal's Mugging, and argue that it is a deeper problem than the St. Petersburg paradox. We offer a way out that is consistent with classical decision theory. Specifically, we propose a "many muggers" response analogous to the "many gods" objection to Pascal's Wager. When a very tiny probability of a great reward becomes a salient outcome of a choice, such as in the offer of the mugger, it can be discounted on the c…
Study of Socio-Cultural Transition in Twilight in Delhi with reference to Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
The study investigated Socio-cultural aspects in novel 'Twilight in Delhi' by Ahmed Ali published in 1940. It analyzed the cultural and social transition that the sub-continent was going through during the British rule in the region. Vygotsky's sociocultural theory has provided the theoretical framework for the study which describes how the society plays its role in learning and shapes the behavior of the individuals. Qualitative research has bee…
How wildfires increase sensitivity of Amazon forests to droughts
The phenology of tropical forests is tightly related to climate conditions. In the Amazon, the seasonal greening of forests is conditioned by solar radiation and rainfall. Yet, increasing anthropogenic pressures (e.g. logging and wildfires), raise concerns about the impacts of forest degradation on the functioning of forest ecosystems, especially in a climate change context. In this study, we relied on remote sensing data to assess the contributi…
