  • Racial Integration, Cost-Benefit Analysis, and Philosophical Humility

    Open Access•Scott Stanley, Sharon Stanley•ARTICLE•Dialogue•2023

    D. C. Matthew offers an original and important critique of racial integration. His claim that integration will aggravate phenotypic devaluation of blackness, threatening black self-worth, is persuasive. However, his stronger normative argument that blacks should reject integration as a consequence because the potential harms to black self-worth outweigh its purported benefits is less convincing, as it rests on a dubious cost-benefit analysis. Ult…

  • Weight Stigma, Citizenship, and Neoliberal Democracy

Scott Stanley, Sharon Stanley et al.•ARTICLE•Polity•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 24

Recent scholarship across a range of disciplines has illuminated how the rhetoric of an "obesity epidemic" in public health converges with everyday fat-shaming rhetoric to mark particular bodies as indicative of moral failing, intellectual debility, and civic unfitness. Sabrina Strings, Rachel Sanders, Amy Farrell, and others have shown that this stigmatization also reinforces racialized, gendered, and neoliberal conceptions of responsible citize…

  • John Stuart Mill, Children's Liberty, and the Unraveling of Autonomy

    Open Access•Scott Stanley, Sharon Stanley•ARTICLE•The Review of Politics•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In On Liberty , John Stuart Mill famously excluded children and so-called barbarians from his otherwise broad grant of liberty to human beings. While many scholars have analyzed and criticized the barbarian exclusion, little attention has been focused on the denial of liberty to children. This article argues that Mill's theory of liberty rests on an untenable dividing line between childhood dependence and adult autonomy. The processes of discipli…

  • The Enduring Challenge of Racial Integration in the United States

    Open Access•Scott Stanley, Sharon Stanley•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 24

This paper formulates a new model of racial integration for African Americans in the United States, based upon a careful consideration of the weaknesses in previous models. Instead of spatial mixing, this model of integration calls for transformed habits of interaction between citizens in public spaces, as well as a redistribution of power, understood as access to resources and opportunities. Integration along these lines would produce mutual tra…

  • Retreat from Politics

    Open Access•Scott Stanley, Sharon Stanley•ARTICLE•Polity•2007•Cited by: 7•References: 3

This essay examines contemporary diagnoses of cynicism, issuing from scholars such as Peter Sloterdijk, Frederic Jameson, and Slavoj Žižek, to distill a clear concept of cynicism and its social and political consequences. In particular, it seeks to call into question accounts in which cynicism suddenly bursts onto the scene as a response to recent, post-1960s political disappointments and the corrosive philosophy of postmodernism. Instead, by tur…
