Performing portugueseness in Germany

A central question is how arguments about this form of national self-representation have, over the past four decades, played out within the migrant community, the wider field of German society, and the still wider …

The Myth of Heimkehrillusion
Many observers of the German scene have argued that the long-termnon-German resident populations have become de facto permanentmembers of German society. Beginning in the 1980s, the termHeimkehrillusion, the "illusion of returning home," gained prominencein accounts of the guest workers' trajectories, as many social scientistsand policy makers came to dismiss the continued assertions of somemigrant populations of their intention to eventually ret…
European Spaces: Portuguese Migrants' Notions of Home and Belonging
Movement, dislocation, and contingent, multilocal forms of belonging are increasingly prevalent and normalized ways of life. Ethnographers of transnationalism are documenting the various ways in which people connect the complex geographies of their lives and attempt to forge meaningful identities within multiple and protracted disjunctures. According to this literature, mobility, travel, transience, and liminality are the common themes of latetwe…
Enacting national selves: Authenticity, adventure, and disaffection in the Portuguese Diaspora
Disparate and, at times, contradictory enactments of “Portugueseness” are explored in relation to debates whose scope is local, national, and transnational. The focus is on how the national self‐representations of Portuguese migrants in Europe resonate with the hegemonic definitions of belonging in Portugal, Germany, and the newly emerging “Europe,” and how the differing images structure inclusion and exclusion within these polities. Descriptions…
