Nayef Ballouz, der frühe Islam und die Orientwissenschaft der DDR
The article deals with the studies the Syrian philosopher Nayef Ballouz undertook in East Berlin and the possible effect their result had on the Oriental Studies in the GDR. Ballouz explored the background and circumstances of the emergence of Islam in the context of Late Antiquity. He argued that certain features of Islam enable it to be used in the fight against the oppression in the Arab World. This standpoint, at first rather isolated, subseq…

The Arabs as Nazis? Some Reflections on "Islamofascism" and Arab Anti-Semitism
One of the main constituents of the so-called Islamofascism is, in the eyes of those who subscribe to this conception, the close affinity of Arabs (and sometimes, Muslims) to Nazi ideology and possibly practice. To bolster this notion, its proponents do basically three things: first, they try to prove that a massive majority of Arabs took a pro-Nazi stand during the Third Reich and especially during World War II and that important Arab figures co…
Offenbach in Arabien
Twice, the theatre of Jacques Offenbach exerted a marked influence on musical theatre in Egypt. The first occasion was a number of performances of his most popular opéra-bouffes, in French and by French artists, around 1870. The ruler, Ismā'īl, tried to introduce European culture in Egypt and gave Offenbach's work a central role in that endeavour. With Ismā'īl's decline, that attempt was discontinued. The second appearance occurred in 1920/21. Th…
Judeophobia in Context: Anti-Semitism among Modern Palestinians
The article is a critical assessment of the claim that anti-Semitic attitudes are widespread among modern Palestinians and that they are to a large extent the cause of their hostility towards Israel. In an overview of the development of the Palestine conflict, the contribution shows that this hostility can easily be explained by the nature of the conflict itself. In their perception of the conflict, Palestinians at times clearly distinguished bet…
