ʿĪsā b. Hišām’s Shiism and Religious Polemic in the Maqāmāt of Badīʿ al-Zamān al-Hamaḏānī (d. 398/1008)
This study reads the Maqāmāt of Badīʿ al-Zamān al-Hamaḏānī (d. 398/1008) against the background of the sectarian milieu of the fourth/tenth century. It begins with a thorough review of the preceding scholarship on al-Hamaḏānī’s sectarian allegiances, and it confirms the contention that Hamaḏānī was a Sunni by conviction. It then proposes that the names and attributes of the narrator of al-Hamaḏānī’s Maqāmāt , ʿ Īsā b. Hišām, reflect an attempt by…

The Students' Representative in the Law Colleges of 14th-Century Damascus
This study examines two fatwās issued by Taqī al-Dīn al-Subkī in the mid-14-century regarding the Shāmīyah Madrasah of Damascus. Both texts refer to the position of "representative of the law students" (nāib al-fuqahā) and state that the position had become customary at the Shāmīyah Madrasah and other madrasahs in Damascus during that period. The existence of the post, which has not been noted in scholarship on pre-modern Islamic education to dat…

The Ottoman Execution of Zayn al-Dīn al-'Āmilī
This study attempts to sort out the partial and contradictory accounts of the last years and martyrdom of the prominent Twelver Shiite jurist Zayn al-Dīn al-'Āmilī (d. 965/1558), drawing on Shiite biographical works, Zayn al-Dīn's writings and the scholarly paraphernalia attached to them, Safavid chronicles, and a recently published travelogue that includes an eye-witness account of his execution in Istanbul. It argues in particular that the infl…

The identity of «the Muftī of Oran», Abū l-‘Abbās Aḥmad b.

ʿAbd al-Ṣamad al-ʿāmilī's Treatise for Sultan Suleiman and the Shīʿī Shāfiʿī Legal Tradition
This study draws on the work Nūr al-ḥaqīqah wa-nawr al-ḥadīqah, a treatise on ethics written by ḥusayn b. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad al-ḥārithī extant in two autograph manuscripts, in an effort to explain how the author and his close companion Zayn al-Dīn al-ʿāmilī, two of the most important Twelver Shiʿi jurists of the sixteenth century, were able to obtain appointments as professors of law at Sunni madrasahs under Ottoman control. Evidence from Nūr al-ḥaqīq…
