On the Gilded Genesis of Structure and Discourse
This article contributes to a form-genetic critique of post-Marxist discourse theory. We argue that the concepts of sign value, equivalence and the empty signifier project the logic of the value-form onto social reality in general. We trace the roots of the concept of sign value in structural linguistics to the Lausanne school of marginalism and reconstruct its permutation in post-Marxist discourse theory as developed by Ernesto Laclau and Chanta…
Reactionary radicalism and the analysis of worker subjectivity in Marx's critique of political economy
This analysis starts off from the contemporary relevance of the theory of 'the radicalism of tradition', arguing that it presents a challenge to Marxism because Marxist work has not sufficiently attended to elements of a theory of worker subjectivity scattered in the critique of political economy. This theory is located on a lower level of abstraction than is commonly assumed and can be applied to subjective dynamics in labour militancy. However,…
Kampens nya former. Klasskamp och klasstruktur sedan de vilda strejkerna
[The new forms of struggle. Class struggle and class structure since the wildcat strikes] In his article, Magnus Granberg analyzes changes in the forms of the class struggle in relation to changes in the class structure of Swedish society. By focusing on the class struggle’s qualitative changes in form, the analysis argues against a primarily quantitative tradition in Swedish and international research on labor disputes. Within a differentiated p…

Objective meaning
This analysis of the work of George Herbert Mead and Alfred Sohn-Rethel compares their respective accounts of the formation of the self. The analysis proceeds from two important similarities: the effort to understand self-consciousness not as primordial but as the product of social processes, and the view that these processes form a circuit: the self arises from consciousness' return to itself, concluding a movement whereby consciousness is first…
Paradoxes of Anti‐austerity Protest
This article analyses an episode of collective resignation. Carried out mainly by specialist nurses, this is a proliferating form of worker protest in Sweden that poses a challenge to austerity policy and emerges in a specific industrial‐relations context. Mobilizing for collective resignation, activist nurses navigate terrains of neoliberal governance, marketization and flexible labour‐market dynamics. The collective resignation is also a form o…
The ideal worker as real abstraction
The article interrogates the significance of the ideal nurse as an ideal worker in a context of labour conflict, using interview material from a study of an episode of conflict ending in the collective resignation of a group of nurses from a Swedish hospital ward. It puts forward the thesis that this ideal worker is best understood as an abstraction that 'achieves practical truth', that is, as a hypostasized practice or a 'real abstraction'. Henc…
