Hidden Patterns in Pottery Fabrics: X-Ray μCT-Based 3D Pore Orientation Analysis to Differentiate Wheel-Throwing and Wheel-Coiling Ceramic Forming Techniques in Whole Vessels
Identifying primary ceramic forming techniques is often problematic when surface traces are altered or erased by secondary shaping on the potter’s wheel, particularly in vessels combining hand-building and wheel use. This study aims to develop a quantitative, non-destructive method to distinguish wheel-throwing and wheel-coiling techniques by analyzing internal fabric features. Experimental replicas of Middle Minoan handleless conical cups (18th …

The death of collective tombs in Middle Bronze Age Crete: New evidence from Sissi
The abandonment of collective tombs in Middle Bronze Age Crete testifies to substantial transformations in funerary, ritual and social practices on the island. Yet, the processes and timing of this abandonment were not uniform, and each cemetery can potentially offer new insights. While some collective tombs fell gradually into disuse, others were deliberately and ritually terminated. Here, the authors explore the cemetery at Sissi, where gradual…
Revealing primary forming techniques in wheel-made ceramics with X-ray microCT
The identification of ceramic forming techniques poses challenges, particularly when different primary and secondary forming techniques are combined, or when specific surface treatments obscure potential diagnostic features. As emphasized in the existing literature, a comprehensive approach should consider all potential sources of information. In this study, we employed a combination of macroscopic observations and X-ray microCT analysis on exper…

Identifying Wheel-Thrown Vases in Middle Minoan Crete? Preliminary Analysis of Experimental Replicas of Plain Handleless Conical Cups from Protopalatial Phaistos
Recent work in Middle Bronze Age Crete has revealed that most Protopalatial or First Palace period pottery is produced through the use of a combination of coil-building and the wheel, i.e., wheelcoiling. Experimental work conducted on pottery from Minoan sites of Northern and Eastern Crete (e.g., Knossos, Myrtos Pyrgos, Palaikastro) has indeed determined that Minoan potters did not develop the skills required to adopt the wheel-throwing technique…
On some late Prepalatial pricket lamps in White‐on‐Dark Ware from beneath the North Wing of the Malia Palace
In 2021, eight pricket lamps were identified during the study of pottery from the sounding undertaken by Olivier Pelon in 1978 and 1985 in Room IX b, located in the North Wing of the Malia Palace. These lamps, contained in an EM III–MM IA assemblage from the northern part of the room, are local productions in semi‐fine red fabric that imitate the elaborate patterns of the White‐on‐Dark Ware, the hallmark of the late Prepalatial productions of Eas…
