Variability of Fish Assemblages throughout the Holocene in Northern Chile (18–31°S)
Our study provides a synthesis and assessment of the ichthyoarchaeological record for pre-Columbian human occupations during the Holocene (ca. 12,000 BP – 1492 AD) on the coast of northern Chile (18-31°S), on the Pacific coast of South America. We focus on the variability of fish assemblages, using data obtained from publications between 1979 and 2023. We standardise and compare ichthyoarchaeological data, applying qualitative and quantitative in…
New insights into the formation process and chronology of the Sambaqui Morro do Ouro, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil
Sambaquis are unique cultural heritage assets in Brazil, encapsulating Indigenous cultures and ecological knowledge that thrived for nearly 7,000 years in some of the world's most diverse biomes. Despite decades of scientific research, uncertainties remain regarding their origins and evolving nature and their role in major socio-economic and demographic shifts linked to food production systems in the Americas. Additionally, gaps persist in our un…
The historical ecology of subsistence and early commercial fisheries in mangrove systems in Brazil
Human population growth and the technological advancements of the 20th and 21st centuries have significantly altered human-environment interactions and led to unprecedented anthropogenic footprints on coastal and ocean systems. Despite thousands of years of exploitation for subsistence and, later, commercial purposes, the ecology of mangrove fisheries along the Brazilian coast and the consequences of these activities remain poorly understood. Thi…
