Beyond the Terrestrial Narrative
This study explores the relationship between the Majos of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain and the sea using ichthyoarchaeological analyses at Punta del Mallorquín, Llano del Sombrero, and Cueva de Villaverde. These sites provide data on fishing practices among the Majos. Combined with existing research, our results allow us to identify the taxonomic frequency of 27 species, offering an initial insight into the use of marine resources in indi…
Past people’s lifeways in Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain)
This paper aims to investigate the lifeway of the Majo (the known name of Lanzarote Indigenous people) through the first zooarchaeological study conducted on Lanzarote Island. This article analyzes the terrestrial and marine species from Fiquinineo-La Peña de las Cucharas settlement and provides detailed anatomical identifications for this faunal assemblage. Diachronic and synchronic analyses exploring animal husbandry, cut marks, paleopathology,…
Distinguishing between sheep and goat in archaeological fumiers through faecal lipid biomarkers
Lipid biomarker analysis focused on steroids has shown to have great potential for discriminating between animal faecal inputs in archaeology. This is particularly interesting when applied to stabling deposits to assess herding strategies and livestock composition. Here we present the results of a sedimentary faecal biomarker study conducted at Belmaco Cave, a pre-European archaeological site in La Palma (Canary Islands). The site was occupied by…
New Perspectives on Old Matters
Based on the study of the primary documentation related to the excavations carried out by Eurico Miller in the 1970s at Abrigo do Sol, Mato Grosso (Brazil), we propose a new reading of the stratigraphic and chronological information obtained from this rock shelter. Despite the apparent incongruity in the chrono-stratigraphic distribution of published dates, a detailed examination of the stratigraphy and field notes allowed us to identify a chrono…
The historical ecology of subsistence and early commercial fisheries in mangrove systems in Brazil
Human population growth and the technological advancements of the 20th and 21st centuries have significantly altered human-environment interactions and led to unprecedented anthropogenic footprints on coastal and ocean systems. Despite thousands of years of exploitation for subsistence and, later, commercial purposes, the ecology of mangrove fisheries along the Brazilian coast and the consequences of these activities remain poorly understood. Thi…
Ornament, Weapon, or Tool? Microwear Analysis of Shark Teeth from the Rio Do Meio Site in Florianópolis, Brazil
Shark remains are common in coastal archaeological sites in southern Brazil. Here we present an analysis of microwear visible on shark teeth found at the Rio do Meio site in Florianópolis, Brazil. It demonstrates that hafted shark teeth were used to work soft materials such as leather, as well as semihard materials such as wood and bone, whereas others probably functioned as arrowheads. The results also show a possible preference for tiger shark …
Arqueozoologia do sítio Rio do Meio (SC)
Shark teeth used as tools
Capture, processing and utilization of sharks in archaeological context
Human-Sharks interaction in chroniclers’ accounts from the XVIth and XVIIth centuries
Sharks teeth are abundant in Brazilian coastal archaeological sites. The interac- tion between natives and sharks, including the capture and differentiated use of this resource, however, has been little discussed probably due to the lack of consistent material evidences and methodologies of analysis that supports more elaborate inferences. In the face of gaps in the data obtained for archaeological contexts, the use of travelling chroniclers’ acc…
Drei radiometrische Datie…
