Apocope and word-final consonants in Italo-Romance
While Standard Italian only displays word-final consonants in loanwords and some function words, Italo-Romance varieties show a wide range of variation in which major classes of consonants can be found in this position. This survey provides a first overview and finds that the northern varieties and the southern varieties are two different systems, the north gravitating to sonorants and the south showing a preference for obstruents. In the vast ma…
The “Dreary World” of Christian Arabs
Charles Issawi’s 1945 memorandum on the “problem of Christian Arabs” distilled their anxieties as liberal nationalism ebbed and Islamic nationalism gained strength. Issawi argued that, absent a Reformation-like rupture, Arab societies were structurally disposed to authoritarian rule – what he termed “Islamic Fascism.” The memorandum, presented in this essay, offers a bleak forecast for the future of minorities in the postwar Middle East. A brief …

Phonological influence in bilectal speakers of Brazilian and European Portuguese
Aims and objectives: This article investigates naturalistic acquisition of a second dialect (D2), comparing the global accent of speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP) exposed to European Portuguese (EP), either as children or as adults (early vs late bilectals). The focus is on the predicted advantage of an early age of onset of the D2, as well as possible crosslinguistic influence from the D2 onto the first dialect (D1). Design and methodology: …
The State of Middle Eastern Studies, Revisited
This keynote address to the 2022 Association for the Study of the Middle East and Africa (ASMEA) conference assesses the health of Middle Eastern studies in the United States, according to three parameters first defined by ASMEA co-founder Bernard Lewis in 1979: standards, politicization, funding. In all three areas, the field remains plagued by endemic problems
Domains and directionality in Kinande vowel harmony: A Correspondence approach
The ATR vowel harmony patterns observed in Kinande have received persistent attention for their combination of stem control and dominance, as well as less familiar phenomena such as dominance reversal and cross-word harmony. This paper provides a Syntagmatic Correspondence analysis of the Kinande vowel harmony system and demonstrates that it straightforwardly accounts for the intricate interaction of featural, directional and morpho-prosodic doma…
The unspoken purpose of the academic boycott
The academic boycott of Israel, ostensibly targeting Israeli academe, is actually meant to isolate and stigmatise Jewish academics in America. It serves the aim of pushing Jewish academics out of shrinking disciplines, where Jews are believed to be ‘over-represented.’ That is how diehard supporters of the Palestinians find academic allies who have no professional interest in Palestine, in fields like American studies or English literature
Nasal consonants, sonority and syllable phonotactics: The dual nasal hypothesis
We investigate the phonotactic behaviour of nasal consonants in a database of over 200 languages. Our findings challenge the common classification of nasals as intermediate between obstruents and liquids on the sonority hierarchy. Instead, we propose that there are two types of nasal consonants, one group with lower sonority than liquids and one with higher sonority. We propose that these two types of nasals differ in the presence or absence of a…
Diphthongs are micro-feet: Prominence and sonority in the nucleus
In this paper we look at prominence in diphthongs and argue that diphthongs are structured in the same way metrical feet are. We propose a set of OT constraints that generates a typology of micro-feet. These are either iambic or trochaic or they are quality/sonority-sensitive with default to iamb or trochee in case of sonority plateaus (i.e., ui and iu). Crucially, we did not find any language with quantity-sensitive micro-feet. This gap is expla…
Syria's Alawis and Shi'ism
The Alawis number perhaps a million persons—about 12 percent of Syria's population—and are concentrated in the northwestern region around Latakia and Tartus. This religious minority has provided Syria's rulers for nearly two decades: Syrian President Hafiz al-Asad, in power since 1970, and Syria's leading military and security chiefs, are of Alawi origin. For at the forefront of Syria's modern struggle for independence were the Sunni Muslims who …

Alignment and locality in the typology of affixing language games
This paper contributes to the discussion around the (extra-)grammatical status of language games (or ludlings). We collected over 60 games which are based on the affixation of a dummy morpheme, which is infixed and iterated in most cases. While some are obviously reduplicative, closer investigation reveals that all the games involving iterativity function like reduplication. Our optimality-theoretic analysis concentrates on the explanation of sha…
The Holographic Principle: Typological Analysis Using Lower Dimensions
A moderately complex factorial typology may consist of hundreds of languages which can opaquely encode linguistically salient categories and generalizations. We propose in this paper that complex typologies can be decomposed and understood using what we call the holographic principle: a large typology can be projected onto simplified versions of itself which can be completely understood using Property Theory (Alber & Prince 2016). The simplified …
The Three Wars of Bernard Lewis
The career of Bernard Lewis was punctuated by three wars: World War II, the Cold War, and what he himself called “the crisis of Islam.” The article seeks to demonstrate that for Lewis, these wars formed a continuum, the common thread being the struggle to defend freedom and democracy against the forces of tyranny
On exceptional stress assignment in Latvian: The case of prefixes
In this article, we examine some previously understudied exceptions to the generalization that Latvian assigns stress to the left-most syllable in a prosodic word, specifically those that involve prefixation. We will show that these apparent exceptions in stress assignment follow from the internal structural properties of the word and are a result of attaching the prefix outside the domain where stress is assigned, which is up to the first functi…
The War on Error: Israel, Islam, and the Middle East
In 'The War on Error', historian and political analyst Martin Kramer presents a series of case studies, some based on pathfinding research and others on provocative analysis, that correct misinformation clouding the public's understanding of the Middle East. He also offers a forensic exploration of how misinformation arises and becomes "fact." The book is divided into five themes: Orientalism and Middle Eastern studies, a prime casualty of the cu…

In the Words of Martin Luther King
As the veneration of Martin Luther King, Jr. has deepened in America, he has been recruited posthumously to more causes. The Six-Day War fully mobilized many of the American Jews who had embraced the civil rights struggle and who marched with King. King supported Israel&s;s right to exist, and said so repeatedly. It is remarkable that this last sentence does not figure in the latter-day polemics over King and Israel, even though King spoke it on …
Arab Awakening and Islamic Revival: The Politics of Ideas in the Middle East
Over the past decade, the political ground beneath the Middle East has shifted. Arab nationalism the political orthodoxy for most of this century has lost its grip on the imagination and allegiance of a new generation. At the same time, Islam as an ideology has spread across the region, and "Islamists" bid to capture the center of politics. Most Western scholars and experts once hailed the redemptive power of Arabism. Arab Awakening and Islamic R…

Implementing the K-Sads-PL as a standard diagnostic tool: Effects on clinical diagnoses
Diagnostic interviews are valuable tools for generating reliable and valid psychiatric diagnoses. However, little is known about the diagnostic effects of implementing such an interview into the standard diagnostic procedure of a child psychiatric clinic. Therefore, we reviewed discharge diagnoses of psychiatric patients (age: 8-12 years; combined sample of inpatients and day hospital patients) over two intervals before and after implementing the…

Transitivity alternations in Yucatec, and the correlation between aspect and argument roles
This paper analyzes the argument structure of Yucatec Mayan. In line with traditional assumptions but in contrast to more recent proposals, we show that Yucatec has ergative morphology but not a split-ergative system. For intransitive verbs there is a strict correlation between aspect and the type of linker: they take ergative clitics in the imperfect, but nominative suffixes in the perfect. Moreover, each intransitive verb is either inherently p…

Azoury: A further episode
Negib Azoury figures in nearly every account of nascent Arab nationalism and its attendant Turcophobia. The literary role of this Syrian Catholic in the spread of the Arab separatist idea is a famous one, and we now possess an illuminating account of his political activities.' These most often culminated in attempts to draw European powers into financial and logistical support for an Arab uprising against Ottoman authority, and to this end Azoury…

Arabistik and Arabism: The passions of Martin Hartmann
The influence of European scholarship upon Middle Eastern nationalisms is a scarcely acknowledged one. The great work of retrieval and compilation done by European archeologists and philologists served their own inquiring spirit. But the findings extracted from excavations, inscriptions and manuscripts soon fed the imaginations of those who lived aside the digs and spoke the modem forms of retrieved languages. European scholarship breathed life i…
