  • Macroeconomic policies and the Iranian economy in the era of sanctions

    Open Access•Magda Kandil, Ida A Mirzaie•ARTICLE•Middle East Development Journal•2021

This paper examines the impact of macroeconomic policies on the Iranian economy. The study covers the time between 1978-2017. The results illustrate the role of the money supply and government spending in supporting growth, although contributing to inflationary pressures in the long run, attesting to supply-side constraints. In the short-run, policies have aimed to provide support to the economy in the face of continued fluctuations with the oil …

  • Towards Understanding the Asian Crisis and its Aftermath

Souphala Chomsisengphet, Magda Kandil•ARTICLE•Journal of the Asia Pacific Economy•2007•References: 1

During the 1997 economic crisis in Asia, we observed that several East Asian economies encountered significant external and internal shocks that led to a widespread economic recession. The severe exchange rate depreciation may have harmed the supply side of these economies such that production was contracted. Many argue that the initial tightened domestic policies aimed at countering these shocks and restoring economic growth may have further exace…

  • Determinants of the Egyptian Labour Migration

    Open Access•Magda Kandil, M Metwally•ARTICLE•International Migration•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 3

The objective is to summarize the pattern of Egyptian migration to Arab oil-producing countries (AOPC), to review some factors that are important determinants of labor movement based on theory, and to empirically model the migration rate to AOPC and to Saudi Arabia. Factors are differentiated as to their relative importance. Push factors are the low wages, high inflation rate, and high population density in Egypt; pull factors are higher wages. I…

  • Variations in the Response of Real Output to Aggregate Demand Shocks

Magda Kandil•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•1991

Using industry data, this paper investigates the determinants of the response of real output to aggregate demand shocks across industries of the U.S. economy. The purpose of this investigation is to verify the empirical validity of two competing explanations for this response: a new classical explanation and a new Keynesian explanation. The author finds that the impact of aggregate demand shocks on industrial real output is negatively related to …

  • Is Increased Nominal Flexibility Stabilizing? Some International Evidence

    Magda Kandil•ARTICLE•Economica•1991

This paper studies the impact of the increased rigidity on macroeconomic fluctuations. The author uses this evidence to test the validity of two major "Keynesian" explanations. The first is the conventional sticky wage/sticky price explanation that suggests that the increased nominal rigidity, ceteris paribus, is destabilizing. The second is a recently developed explanation that suggests that the increased flexibility is destabilizing. The author…

  • The Impact of Migrants' Remittances on the Egyptian Economy

    Open Access•Magda Kandil, Mohammed Metwally et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•1990•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the impact of the large remittances made by Egyptian migrants to their home country on the Egyptian economy. In order to study this impact, we use the implications of the standard Keynesian model. We estimated the structural equations of the model using annual data for the Egyptian economy over the period from 1970 to 1984.... The results suggest that remittances have had a strong positive impact on…
