Flow of Ideas
Economic societies emerged during the late eighteenth century. We argue that these institutions reduced the costs of accessing useful knowledge by adopting, producing and diffusing new ideas. Combining location information for the universe of 3,300 members across active economic societies in Germany with those of patent holders and World’s Fair exhibitors, we show that regions with more members were more innovative in the late nineteenth century.…
Deutschland 1871
Immigration and the Diffusion of Technology
This paper analyzes long-term effects of skilled-worker immigration on productivityfor the Huguenots migration to Prussia. We combine Huguenot immigration lists from1700 with Prussian firm-level data on the value of inputs and outputs in 1802 in aunique data base. In 1685, religious persecution drove highly skilled Huguenots out ofFrance into backward Brandenburg-Prussia where they were channeled into towns tocompensate population losses due to p…
History of Ancient Egypt
This is a vivid chronological history of the civilization of ancient Egypt from its foundation some 5000 years ago to its conquest by Alexander the Great in 332 BCE - effectively the first half of written human history. It is based on Professor Hornung's unrivalled knowledge of archaeological and documentary evidence, and provides as straightforward a story as the varied nature and extent of that evidence allows. The book opens with a considerati…

Railroads and Growth in Prussia
We study the effect of railroad access on urban population growth. Using GIS techniques, we match triennial population data for roughly 1, 000 cities in 19th-century Prussia to georeferenced maps of the German railroad network. We find positive short- and long-term effects of having a station on urban growth for different periods during 1840–1871. Causal effects of (potentially endogenous) railroad access on city growth are identified using prope…
Immigration and the Diffusion of Technology
This paper analyzes long-term effects of skilled-worker immigration on productivity for the Huguenot migration to Prussia. In 1685, religiously persecuted French Huguenots settled in Brandenburg-Prussia and compensated for population losses due to plagues during the Thirty Years’ War. We combine Huguenot immigration lists from 1700 with Prussian firm-level data on the value of inputs and outputs in 1802 in a unique database to analyze the effects…
Ipehd—The ifo Prussian Economic History Database
This article describes the ifo Prussian Economic History Database (iPEHD), a public use county-level database covering a rich collection of variables for nineteenth-century Prussia. The Royal Prussian Statistical Office collected these data in several censuses over the years 1816–1901. These data provide a unique source for micro-regional empirical research in economic history, enabling analyses of education, religion, fertility, industrializatio…
Education and Catch-up in the Industrial Revolution
Research increasingly stresses the role of human capital in modern economic development. Existing historical evidence—mostly from British textile industries—however, rejects that formal education was important for the Industrial Revolution. Our new evidence from technological follower Prussia uses a unique school enrollment and factory employment database linking 334 counties from pre-industrial 1816 to two industrial phases in 1849 and 1882. Usi…

Akhenaten and the Religion of Light
Akhenaten, also known as Amenhotep IV, was king of Egypt during the Eighteenth Dynasty reigned from 1375 to 1358 B.C. E. Called the religious revolutionary, he is the earliest known creator of a new religion. The cult he founded broke with Egypt's traditional polytheism focused its worship on a single deity, the sun god Aten. Erik Hornung, one of the world's preeminent Egyptologists, here offers a concise accessible account of his religion of lig…

Vorwort der Herausgeber
Dietrich Bonhoeffers Haft im Wehrmachtuntersuchungsge fangnis Tegel begann am 5. April 1943. . . . Nach 48 Stunden wurd…

Black Holes Viewed from Within
Among the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs is a sign that can be termed and defined as a "Black Hole." It is a circle (writing being two-dimensional) filled in black, appearing in the Old Kingdom Pyramid Texts for the first time. Initially serving as a determinative for concepts like "death" or "enemy," it is also later used for words like "pit," "hole," or "cave," and in a few rare instances this black circle determines the word for the Netherworld …

had anticipated. After staying there for two full weeks, he proceeded in great haste on towards Assiut, the largest city south of Cairo. For Tell el-Amarna, which was on his way and which he called Psinaula, only a single day was spared, in the beginning of November, 1828. On this spot, already the Jesuit Pater Claude Sicard had made rather bizarre copies of one of the boundary stelae in 1714; and later, the scholars of the Napoleonic expedition …
