  • Self-Organization Response in a Crisis

Haibo Zhang, Wu Chen•ARTICLE•Natural Hazards Review•2026

This study examines how self-organizing groups function during crisis response in China’s centralized system. Through case analysis of a Shanghai community during COVID-19, we investigate how emergent citizen groups establish legitimate relationships with administrative structures, what mechanisms enable their adaptability, and how key actors facilitate coordination. Integrating complex adaptive systems and institutional theories, we propose that…

  • Impact of Salinity on Straw Conversion Into Different Soil Organic Carbon Fractions

Open Access•Wenjun Xie, Cailing Shi et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2026

Although straw is widely used to ameliorate saline soils, the impact of salinity on straw conversion into soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions remains unclear. Our aim was to explore how soil salinity affected straw conversion into SOC. A 180‐day soil incubation with 13 C‐labeling maize straw was conducted to investigate straw conversion into free particulate organic carbon (fPOC), occluded particulate organic carbon (oPOC), and mineral‐associated…

Open Access•Dan Wu, Jiani Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2025

Background: Multimorbidity of chronic diseases has become an increasingly serious public health problem. However, the research on the current situation of multimorbidity in the older adults in Jiangsu, China is relatively lacking. Methods: We surveyed a total of 229,926 inpatients aged above 60 and with two or more chronic diseases in the First Affiliated Hospital with Nanjing Medical University from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2021. The Apri…

  • Legitimacy building in crisis

Wu Chen, Haibo Zhang•ARTICLE•Public Management Review•2025

This study examines how citizen-led mutual aid self-organizations established legitimacy during Shanghai’s 2022 COVID-19 outbreak. Through an analysis of 1,010 questionnaires and 21 interviews, we find that cognitive legitimacy emerged through education and trust. Normative and pragmatic legitimacy developed simultaneously via role differentiation. Small management teams enabled post-crisis organizational survival by maintaining legitimacy throug…

  • The Distance From the Sea Determined the Distribution Pattern of Saline‐Alkali Soil Quality Through Indirect Effect

Open Access•Hanwen Liu, Meng Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2025

Soil quality is a crucial attribute for maintaining biological productivity, human health, and ecosystem service function. However, the distribution of saline‐alkali soil quality and its influencing factors in the Yellow River Delta region remain poorly understood, posing challenges to sustainable agricultural development. The study evaluated soil quality across various land‐use types and depths in the southern Yellow River Delta region. A total …

  • Healthy lifestyles and the incidence risk and time of carotid plaque

Open Access•Chunying Lin, Xingyi Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

  • Effects of Government Responsibility Framing, Social Norms and Autonomy Supports on Citizens' Self‐Responsibility Perception of Disaster Preparedness During Disaster Warnings

Open Access•Zheng Wei, Xue Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Contingencies and…•2025•References: 101

Self‐responsibility perception (SRP) is a key yet under‐researched psychological antecedence influencing citizens' disaster preparedness behaviours. Existing studies primarily examined SRP from a static perspective, overlooking its dynamic and multi‐dimensional nature. This study focused on the two dimensions of SRP, namely self‐responsibility acceptance and self‐responsibility attribution. It investigated how emerging environmental cues in disas…

Open Access•Yi Yang, Liu Liu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

Purpose Patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) mostly receive essential routine care and support from informal caregivers, who usually experience poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The study aimed to evaluate the HRQoL and its predictors among informal caregivers of patients with advanced NSCLC in China. Methods We interviewed the adult caregiver population of patients with advanced NSCLC (stage IIIB~IV) in nine ter…

  • Effective Approaches to Neural Query Language Identification

    Open Access•Xingzhang Ren, Baosong Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2022•References: 3

Query language identification (Q-LID) plays a crucial role in a cross-lingual search engine. There exist two main challenges in Q-LID: (1) insufficient contextual information in queries for disambiguation; and (2) the lack of query-style training examples for low-resource languages. In this article, we propose a neural Q-LID model by alleviating the above problems from both model architecture and data augmentation perspectives. Concretely, we bui…

Short texts (STs) present in a variety of scenarios, including query, dialog, and entity names. Most of the exciting studies in neural machine translation (NMT) are focused on tackling open problems concerning long sentences rather than short ones. The intuition behind is that, with respect to human learning and processing, short sequences are generally regarded as easy examples. In this article, we first dispel this speculation via conducting pr…

The role of the paired assistance policy (PAP) in facilitating recovery after the Wenchuan earthquake in China on 12 May 2008 is best analysed from a network perspective. This paper makes five assumptions to explore the relationship, and then draws on three additional cases to examine them. The key findings support all five assumptions. First, the interactions of authority compliance initiated the PAP, and second, the interactions of resource inp…

Drawing upon the protective action decision model and the heuristic-systematic model, this study investigated the determinants of parents’ response to the 2016 vaccine crisis in Shandong Province, China. A survey was conducted from Anhui Province (N = 456). The findings showed that both perceived vaccine knowledge and perceptions of risk from the vaccine crisis were vital in predicting parents’ information insufficiency (the perceived discrepancy…

Soil erosion risk assessment is an essential foundation for the planning and implementation of soil and water conservation projects. The commonality among existing studies is that they considered different indicators (e.g., rainfall and slope) in order to determine the soil erosion risk; however, the majority of studies in China neglect one important indicator, namely the slope aspect. It is widely accepted that the vegetation and distribution of…
