A Comparison of Rural Educational Disadvantage in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand Using OECD's Pisa
This study compares rural educational disadvantage across Australia, Canada, and New Zealand using data from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Across the three countries, student reading literacy and school learning environments are less positive in rural communities than in urban. Furthermore, rural disadvantage in educational outcomes (reading) and opportunities i…
An IoT and Wearable Technology Hackathon for Promoting Careers in Computer Science
This paper explores the use of a constructivist 21st-century learning model to implement a week-long workshop, delivered as a “hackathon,” to encourage preuniversity teenagers to pursue careers in STEM, with a particular emphasis on computer science. For Irish preuniversity students, their experience of computing can vary from word processing to foundational programming, and while many schools are looking to introduce more ICT into the classroom,…

Mortality rate and confidence interval estimation in humanitarian emergencies
Surveys are conducted frequently in humanitarian emergencies to assess the health status of the population. Most often, they employ complex sample designs, such as cluster sampling. Mortality is an indicator commonly estimated in such surveys. Confidence limits provide information on the precision of the estimate and it is important to ensure that confidence limits for a mortality rate account for the survey design and utilise an acceptable metho…

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and Reported Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy
We investigated the effect of maternal smoking during pregnancy on the relative risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) by linking data from Georgia birth and death certificates from 1997 to 2000. We estimated the effect of misclassifying smokers as non-smokers and the effect of being misclassified on SIDS rates, and we calculated the fraction of cases caused by exposure. Of all SIDS cases, 21% were attributable to maternal smoking; among smo…
The Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (Masc): Factor Structure, Reliability, and Validity
Rapid Nutrition Surveys: How Many Clusters are Enough
On the basis of theoretical considerations, population-based nutrition surveys of 30 clusters of 30 children should provide reasonably valid estimates of the prevalence of malnutrition with at least 95 per cent confidence that the estimated prevalence differs from the true value by no more than 5 per cent. In areas of famine in Africa, where an urgent need often exists for rapid nutritional assessment to determine the extent and severity of the p…
