Partnering with Communities to Understand Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) Impacts on Access to Shared Micromobility
This study explored the facilitators and barriers of community bike share use in a mid-sized city with high incidence of poverty and racial diversity using a community-based participatory action research (CBPAR) photovoice framework with the Stanford Our Voice (OV) Discovery Tool digital application. Community members participated in one of three community citizen science walks with follow up focus groups facilitated by osteopathic medical studen…
Recent contributions of behavioural and biomedical scientists in applied anthropology of hygiene practices and management of diarrhoea in Bangladesh
In the past few years anthropologists, sociologists and biostatisticians have made contributions on hygiene practices and management of diarrhoea in relation to young children in rural Bangladesh. The cultural practices of caregivers with regard to washing hands after cleansing the anus of young children following defectation and disposing of the stool often do not fulfil the biomedical criteria for prevention of the transmission of diarrhoea-cau…
Effect of child survival on contraceptive use in Bangladesh
A study in Bangladesh showed that couples who lost a child often stopped practising contraception in order to have another child. Logistic regression analysis revealed that contraceptive continuation was related to maternal age, parity, husband's education and the sex of the last child.
Effects of Floods on the Use and Condition of Pit Latrines in Rural Bangladesh
The severe floods of 1987 in Bangladesh had devastating effects on many development activities. Here, the use and condition of improved sanitation facilities (double pit water sealed latrines) during the 1987 peak flood period are presented. Two surveys on the use and condition of the latrines were carried out in May (pre-flood) and September (post-flood) 1987 in a rural area 60 km north of Dhaka, with a population of about 4500. General usage of…
Differentials of fertility between polygynous and monogamous marriages in rural Bangladesh
This paper discusses polygynous marriages in rural Bangladesh, using marital status and birth registration data from the Demographic Surveillance System of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, for the period 1975–79. Of all the marriages recorded during this period about 5% were polygynous. To identify the women polygynously married, 1974 census data of the DSS area were used. The difference in age at marriage between the pol…
Age Misstatement for Young Children in Rural Bangladesh
Age data for 3,393 children, six years of age and under, in rural Bangladesh are analyzed for the level and pattern of age misstatement. Random error, age heaping at whole years, and preferences for particular ages are found in the data. Variation in age reporting is discovered to increase monotonically with age. Systematic errors in age misstatement display modest overstatement for the first four years of life and more pronounced understatement …
