Seeds for Reclaiming Art in Education
The concern of this paper is to provide a number of ‘seeds’ for a reclaiming of art in education by placing emphasis upon art's pedagogy or art's education. The notion of reclaiming does not infer a return to a utopian past or to a halcyon future, but it invokes a reaffirmation of the adventure of events of art practice that can take us beyond ourselves towards new creative assemblages and possibilities for becoming‐with. Such reclaiming requires…
Inheritance, disobedience and speculation in pedagogic practice
This article considers relations between inheritance, disobedience and speculation in art practice and art education in schools and other sites of teaching and learning. In recent decades educational practices such locations have been subject to doctrinal cultures of audit, standardisation and competences, invoking what Michael Hampe terms the homogenization of the interpretation of experience. In contrast the article advocates the idea of specul…

What is Art in Education? New Narratives of Learning
In this paper I address some questions pertinent to the development of school art education. I begin by considering how we relate to art and how we might understand the notion of this relation in terms of human subjectivity and the art object. To do this I describe particular art practices that have broadened social conceptions of art, which in turn, become part of art itself and shape performances of understanding, learning and practice. Implici…
Theorising how student teachers form their identities in initial teacher education
This article investigates the forming of student teacher identities in initial teacher education. By analysing student narratives of school experiences the article argues that although reflective, reflexive and critical discourses are helpful interrogatory tools, they presuppose a prior subjectivity which fails to acknowledge the idea that it is through such discursive practices that subjectivity emerges. Such discourses also suggest an emancipat…

The cultural production of ability in drawing
This paper argues for a more inclusive approach towards assessing pupils' observational drawings and an expanded comprehension of ability in drawing practices. With reference to the work of Foucault and Lucan, the paper examines the constitutive processes of assessment of drawing ability and argues that such ability is not a natural possession, but a production of specific practices and discourses in the field of art in education
