Confusion as an Ideological Tool in Malaysian Newspaper Op-Eds
This paper offers an analysis of the lexical item confusion in opinion-editorials published by a Malaysian newspaper. The data was collected from The Star, a Malaysian English daily, between 1 January 2009 and 30 June 2010. To contextualize, in April 2009, the previous Prime Minister departs and the country welcomes a new leader with an apparently nationalist identity discourse of 1Malaysia (Malaysia as an inclusive nation). This is also when rel…

In 2002, the Malaysian government introduced English as MOI by replacing Malay, the national language, for teaching mathematics and science, at the school level. However, in 2009, the policy was reversed …

This study is about how the discursive field of ‘Islamic militancy’ is constructe…
The Rift Within An Imagined Community: Understanding Nationalism(s) in Bangladesh
Levels of explicitness in political speeches
Political speeches are a special kind of discourse that ‘produce and reproduce beliefs, opinions, and ideologies’ (Wodak 2004: 381). One way of studying such discourse would be to look into the use of the grammatical category of performatives. As analysts seek to interpret a text, they must not forget the reality that political discourses are more about beliefs, opinions and ideologies constructed from a partisan perspective than an individual ch…
