Marxism and Migration
Marxism, feminism, and “intersectionality”
“Intersectionality” is a key feminist concept used to explicate a multiplicity of socially constructed differences. While the term itself emerged from Black feminist activism and scholarship in the 1970s, it references a problem that has been at the forefront of international feminist struggles for decades, that is, how should we understand the organization of human life along lines of race, gender, sexuality, class, ability, and so forth, and ho…
Learning, labour, and value
This paper examines experiences of labour market exploitation and precarity amongst migrating young adults in Canada. It analyses a specific case of hyper-exploitation and wage theft as experienced by a group of refugee young adults. Utilizing feminist materialist conceptions of knowledge and learning, this analysis seeks to move beyond an individualized conception of learning and experience by illuminating the inter-constitutive relations of soc…
Youth as/in Crisis
Modeling’ youth work
This paper examines the use of logic models in the development of community initiatives within the AmeriCorps program. AmeriCorps is the civilian national service programme in the U.S., operating as a grants programme to local governments and not-for-profit organisations and providing low-cost labour to address pressing issues of social inequality. Logic models are a popular tool in programme planning, which graphically illustrates the relationsh…
Youth, Social Crisis, & Learning
This special issue takes up two contemporary challenges in the field of adult education and the study of lifelong learning; first, the notion of ‘crisis’ and second, the question of ‘youth.’ The la
Does geographic context influence employability‐motivated volunteering? The role of area‐level material insecurity and urbanicity
There is a growing public discourse that volunteering increases the likelihood of finding a better job because it improves social and human capital. While previous studies have largely treated volunteers' motivations as individualistically determined, contextual determinants of volunteers' motivations are relatively neglected. The purpose of this study is to understand the individual and contextual characteristics in which individuals are more li…
The 'local' fetish as reproductive praxis in democratic learning
This article explores the theoretical conceptualization of the local as the preferential spatial domain for democratic participation and learning. It critiques the ideological nature of educational theory that bifurcates the local from the ‘the global’ through the application of the Marxist concept of ‘fetish’. The argument developed here is that the concept of fetish enables educators to conceptualize how and why this fragmentation of the local …
Views from the blackboard
This article discusses findings from two case studies examining the impact of neoliberal education reform on the classroom practice of teachers and adult educators in Ontario, Canada. We asked educators to comment on the impacts of 20 years of policy shifts in their classrooms. Teachers in public schools and adult literacy programmes echoed each other on issues of managerialism, privatisation and punitive accountability mechanisms. Both schooltea…
Educating from Marx
Educators have been working to develop an important body of literature on neo-liberalism, capitalism, and imperialism. This combines original empirical studies with literature review from critical adu
Adult Education and the “Matter” of Consciousness in Marxist-Feminism
In teaching adult education courses, a major challenge for us is to make students articulate the sources of their knowledge about themselves or the world. We ask them to think through these questions: "How do you know what you know?" "Where does your knowledge come from?" There are some immediate and predictable answers such as personal experience, accumulated academic, or work-related knowledge, or social learning through culture, tradition, med…
Learning by dispossession
This paper brings together two ongoing research projects on current citizenship learning programs in Iraq and the United States, both of which draw from the theoretical ground of Marxist-feminist perspective. A particular strength of this paper is its comparison between two American citizenship education programs in the context of neoliberalism, war and imperialism. Many claim that citizenship learning is always an ideological project promoting a…
