The Mullan Road: Carving a Passage through the Frontier Northwest, 1859–62 . Edited by Paul D. McDermott, Ronald E. Grim, and Philip Mobley
The 624-mile Mullan Road was built as a military wagon route linking two frontier forts, Fort Walla Walla on the Columbia and Fort Benton on the Missouri. The War Department allocated a total of $230,000 for the project designed “to be a quicker, more practical alternative for immigrants, troops, and future railroad builders to reach the Pacific Northwest—better than the Old Oregon Trail” (p. 225). Under Lt. John Mullan’s leadership, workers star…
Standpoint theory, realism and the search for objectivity in the sociology of education
This paper evaluates the contribution of ‘social realism’ in resolving questions of knowledge and curriculum in the sociology of education. Social realists argue that, in the interests of educational equality, all pupils should have access to ‘powerful’ knowledge produced by specialist intellectual communities. Social realism relies upon a critique of standpoint theory, taking it to be irrealist, relativist and ignorant of the post-empiricist rev…
FromHope & GlorytoWaterloo Road: Mediating discourses of 'crises' surrounding schools and schooling in British television drama, 1999-2011
Popular television drama is an important discursive site engaging the public with debates about schooling and professional identity. Between 1999 and 2011, external discourses of ‘crisis’ (of academic achievement or students’ mental and emotional health) were mediated as alternative discourses of ‘crisis, failure, and salvation’ in which a Standards agenda predominated, or that of the school as a ‘caring community’. Genre analysis reveals how ‘sc…
Arrestin-2 and G Protein-coupled Receptor Kinase 5 Interact with NFκB1 p105 and Negatively Regulate Lipopolysaccharide-stimulated ERK1/2 Activation in Macrophages
Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a recently described receptor class involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity. Here, we demonstrate that arrestin-2 and GRK5 (G protein-coupled receptor kinase 5), proteins that regulate G protein-coupled receptor signaling, play a negative role in TLR4 signaling in Raw264.7 macrophages. We find that lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ERK1/2 phosphorylation is significantly enhanced in arrestin-2 and …

The Confederacy as a Revolutionary Experience
The purpose of this book is to show that the Confederacy not only enacted an external revolution (in terms of its war with the Union), but that it also experienced a very significant internal revolution. Provides an explaination of what things within Southern society were revolutionized and in what ways
