Integration, Memory, and Reason of State in Times of Genocide
for their thoughtful engagements with my book.I am thankful to all for their careful reading and for providing generous and critical feedback.I am particularly glad that my central arguments resonated with their own scholarly work, much of which I deeply admire. Most notably, I appreciate that the book's genealogical reading of liberal-secular power and its racialized regulations was seen as relevant for understanding contemporary minority politic…
Ways of Knowing Muslim Cultures and Societies
This volume showcases a variety of innovative approaches to the study of Muslim societies and cultures, inspired by and honouring Gudrun Krämer and her role in transforming the landscape of Islamic Studies. With contributions from scholars from around the world, the articles cover an extraordinarily wide geographical scope across a broad timeline, with transdisciplinary perspectives and a historically informed focus on contemporary phenomena. Pitfalls of consensus-orientated dialogue
This article discusses one deliberative approach to dialogue as conceptualized by the philosopher Jürgen Habermas and brings this into a conversation with the current dialogue practice of the Deutsche Islam Konferenz (DIK) in Germany. This ongoing dialogue forum was initiated by the Ministry of the Interior in the autumn of 2006 in order to enact a structured conversation with Muslims and as a means of recognising them as ‘German Muslims’. Dialogue as a Governmental Technique
Throughout the last decades, state and civil society actors in Germany have undertaken a number of initiatives in order to enter into a structured conversation with Muslim communities, and to find spokespersons who serve as partners for political authorities. This process has commonly been analysed in terms of its empowering effects for Muslims via the emerging 'institutionalisation' of Islam. The modes and techniques of power at stake in this pr…
