  • Topical disconnect between research and needs: The importance of author location

Open Access•Ana Lucia Kassouf, Lucas Ronconi•ARTICLE•Third World Quarterly•2026

We measure the disconnect between the topics people care about and the topics covered in journal publications in 60 countries. We combine nationally representative opinion surveys and publication records from 14 economics journals during the last two decades. Our key finding is that the topical disconnect significantly varies according to the place of residence of the authors. Researchers located in the Global South are 25% more likely, than thos…

  • Weberian Civil Service and Labor Enforcement

    Open Access•M Dewey, Lucas Ronconi•ARTICLE•Public Administration and…•2023

Most workers in the developing world do not receive the benefits they are legally entitled to. Why, then, is there so little public enforcement? This paper argues that this is partly because of a lack of an autonomous and professional bureaucracy. Compared to a politicized labor inspectorate, a Weberian agency is free of the short‐termism imposed by electoral competition. This is key for ensuring enforcement, given that its costs are more immedia…

  • Demand-Side Obstacles to Publishing Economics Research: A View from the South

Open Access•Lucas Ronconi, Ana Lucia Kassouf•ARTICLE•Progress in Development Studies•2022•References: 4

We discuss obstacles that researchers located in developing countries face to publish in economics journals. We group obstacles into two categories. ‘Supply-side’ obstacles include lack of funding, networking and certain elements of research capacity. ‘Demand-side’ obstacles arise from the practices of many journals’ editors. It is these less well-recognized obstacles that are the focus of this commentary. This set of practices combines to make i…

  • Land Use Regulations, Compliance and Land Markets in Argentina

    Open Access•Paavo Monkkonen, Lucas Ronconi•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 20

Empirical evidence on the impact of stringent land use regulations on the price of land and housing in urban areas is growing, yet most research has been carried out in countries where ordinances are enforced. If enforcement is lax, the ultimate impact of strict rules on land and housing prices is unclear. Lower levels of compliance with rules can result in negative externalities and thereby exert downward pressure on the price of formal land. Th…

  • Discrimination in Latin America: An Economic Perspective

Néstor Gandelman, Eduardo Gandelman et al.•BOOK•2010

This book presents a set of studies on contemporary discrimination in Latin America that takes advantage of these new tools by focusing on social interactions that range from cooperation, group formation, and the impact of migration in poor families to specific markets such as housing and labor. The techniques applied include traditional regression analysis, experimental approaches, and audit studies, as well as structural methods. This wide rang…

  • Enforcement and Compliance with Labor Regulations in Argentina

    Open Access•Lucas Ronconi•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•2010•Cited by: 14•References: 13

The author analyzes the effect of government enforcement on compliance with labor regulations in Argentina, a country where only half of the workforce receives all the benefits to which they are legally entitled. Constructing panel data for the period 1995-2002 across provinces and using the number of labor inspectors per capita as a proxy for enforcement, he estimates the effect of enforcement on compliance with six employment and social securit…

    Open Access•Steven Raphael, Lucas Ronconi•ARTICLE•Du Bois Review Social Science…•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 16

This paper provides an overview of the current debate among economists pertaining to the effects of recent immigration on the earnings and employment of native-born workers. Since much of this debate revolves around methodological differences in research design, we devote much of our effort to discussing the various strategies that researchers have used to isolate immigrant competition effects, and attempt to clarify the strengths and weaknesses …
