Development of Negative Emotionality in Mothers Across 18 Years
INTRODUCTION: Negative emotionality (NE) tends to decrease with age. However, we lack information about how divorce and other social role experiences predict long-term development of NE in women after the transition to parenthood. METHODS: The current study used data from an 18-year longitudinal study with eight data collection waves, including 823 mothers living with their child's father at baseline. Mixed models and Random Intercept Cross-Lagge…
The nature of the relation between mental well-being and ill-being
Interparental conflict trajectories across various child residence arrangements when parents live apart
In Norway, as in most Western countries, a growing proportion of parents living apart choose shared residence for their children. The aim of this study was to investigate trajectories of five interparental conflict dimensions across four child residence arrangement groups (and three combination groups) to improve understanding of different conflict trajectories when parents live apart. We used data from the Dynamics of Family Conflict study. Fami…
Interparental Conflict and Children’s Inclination to Exercise their Right to be Heard when Parents Separate
For children to exercise their right to be heard when parents divorce or separate, they must voice their opinions at a time potentially characterised by significant interparental conflict. This study investigates whether several dimensions of interparental conflict are associated with whether children had expressed their opinions on post-divorce life to their parents and/or friends. Children aged 7-15 (N = 407) and their parents were recruited to…
Predictors of Relationship Satisfaction Across the Transition to Parenthood
The purpose of the study was to describe trajectories of relationship satisfaction across the transition to parenthood, and identify predictors of these trajectories. This study is based on the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa). Mothers (N = 43,517) reported on their relationship satisfaction at five timepoints from 17 weeks gestation to 5 years postpartum, as well as sociodemographic, psychological, and behavioral covariate…
Children's participation in post‐divorce decision‐making
Increased child participation in decision‐making about custody and visitation when parents separate is an explicit political goal. This study delineates central family processes associated with child participation in post‐divorce decision‐making, both in mediation and in the home. Children recruited to the Dynamics of Family Conflict Study at Norwegian family counselling centres (7–15 years, n = 554) completed surveys about interparental conflict…
Validation and short-form development of Conflict and Problem-solving Strategy Scales
The Strategy scales from the Conflicts and Problem-solving Scales is widely used and meaningfully distinguishes between conflict behaviours characterized by Cooperation, Avoidance, Child Involvement, Stalemating, and Verbal and Physical Aggression. The aim of this study was to validate the scale and develop a short-form for use across family structures. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) showed an unsatisfactory fit of the original Strategy scale…
Genetic and environmental contributions to co-occurring ADHD and emotional problems in school-aged children
Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience co-occurring emotional problems. ADHD with this comorbidity is associated with poorer outcomes than ADHD without comorbidity. Better understanding of the etiology of comorbidity could improve prevention of negative outcomes for children with ADHD. The sample consisted of 567 twin pairs, 3,632 sibling pairs, and 2,340 cousin pairs from the Norwegian Mother, Father and C…
A Common Family Factor Underlying Language Difficulties and Internalizing Problems
Studies have identified concurrent, longitudinal, and bidirectional associations between language difficulties and internalizing problems. This is commonly explained by social exclusion or withdrawal from peers, but underlying mechanisms are not well understood. This study uses sibling data to investigate if the comorbidity between language difficulties and internalizing problems is best explained by familial factors shared by siblings, such as g…
Mechanisms linking parental educational attainment with child ADHD, depression, and academic problems
BACKGROUND: Low educational attainment in parents is associated with child psychopathology. It is not clear whether the associations are due to risk factors that family members share or due to effects of maternal or paternal education on the offspring. We investigate whether associations between maternal and paternal educational attainment and child symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), depression, and academic problems are…
Prevalence and stability of mental disorders among young adults
BACKGROUND: Mental disorders often have onset early in life, contribute substantially to the global disease burden, and may interfere with young people's ability to complete age-relevant tasks in important developmental periods. However, knowledge about prevalence and course of mental disorders in young adulthood is sparse. The aim of the current study was to estimate prevalence and stability of mental disorders from the twenties to the thirties/…
Parental Child‐Rearing Conflicts Through Adolescence
Research on longitudinal interparental conflict patterns and offspring development is scarce. The population-based TOPP study (N = 459) was used to investigate (1) child-rearing conflict trajectories through four time points during childhood and adolescence (ages 8-16), and (2) associations between conflict trajectories and child characteristics (i.e., birth order, gender, externalizing patterns from early childhood). Latent profile analysis iden…
Predicting Well‐Being and Internalizing Symptoms in Late Adolescence From Trajectories of Externalizing Behavior Starting in Infancy
This study aimed to examine the long-term prediction of well-being and internalizing symptoms from trajectories of externalizing behavior problems in 921 children from a population-based sample. We found that a high stable trajectory of externalizing behavior from infancy (age 1.5) to mid-adolescence (age 14.5) predicted lower scores on life satisfaction and flourishing for both girls and boys (age 18.5). The high stable trajectory also predicted…
Health, health behaviors, and health dissimilarities predict divorce
Poor health and health behaviors are associated with divorce. This study investigates the degree to which six health indicators and health behaviors among husbands and wives are prospectively related to divorce, and whether spousal similarities in these factors are related to a reduced risk of marital dissolution. Theoretically, a reduced risk is possible, because spousal similarity can help the couple’s adaptive processes. The data come from a g…
Associations between parental hearing impairment and children's mental health
Long shadows
Predictors of dissolutions over the next 17 years could be identified among mothers of toddlers. Different predictors were associated with early and late dissolutions, indicating different cascades
Attrition and generalizability in longitudinal studies
Long-term longitudinal studies are valuable for studying associations between risk/protective factors and health outcomes even considering substantial attrition rates
Reciprocal longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and romantic partners' synchronized view of relationship quality
Depressive symptoms are negatively associated with relationship satisfaction. The degree to which depression is associated longitudinally with relationship quality as assessed by both partners, versus with the depressed person's unique view of the relationship, may have implications for interventions. Longitudinal associations between depressive symptoms and relationship satisfaction were examined among 260 couples. Individual measures of relatio…
