Guaranteed Admissions Pathway Initiatives to Medical School as a Means to Physician Workforce Diversification
Purpose: Medical schools in the United States work to diversify the physician workforce through various admissions initiatives.1 These admissions policies include pathway strategies to attract competitive candidates, including guaranteed admissions (GA) programs that guarantee admission to a university’s medical school at the time of matriculation in an undergraduate bachelor’s program. Other pathway initiatives may focus on diversity to make adm…
Teacher Learning Communities and Leadership
This article explores the connection between teaching effectiveness and participation in teacher learning communities (TLCs) in the context of a second-level co-educational urban school. In particular, it examines the role of educational leadership in their development and concomitantly toward the enhancement of teaching and learning. Seven teachers contributed to the research across two existing TLCs at the site school. It emerged that relations…
All in this together? The reconstitution of policy discourses on teacher collaboration as governance in post-crisis Europe
With the rise of network governance, and its concomitant fragmentation of public education systems across Europe, international studies have recommended teacher collaboration as a means to bring educational stakeholders together. Yet, despite some agreement over the potential benefits to student, professional and organisational learning, there is limited comparative research into the policy response of national governments to this recommendation …
The being of a teacher
This article adopts a phenomenological-oriented approach to explore the perceptions of a small cohort of teachers about teacher pedagogical well-being (TPWB), the experience of which is intimately connected with a teacher’s sense of self-care. Existing Finnish research on this topic informed the design of semi-structured interviews across two schools. The findings were analysed initially with reference to the existing research. It identified mana…

Bien común = Common good

The emphasis on the concept of ‘social justice’ in modern justice theory compared with the much broader reach of classical justice theory reflects a general shift in which justice theory has become more a concern of political philosophers than jurists. This article discusses two books that each advance a non-ideal modern social justice theory, namely Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? by Michael J Sandel and The Idea of Justice by Amartya Sen…
The Influence of Socialism in Black and Womanist Theologies
This article examines the role of Black and womanist theologies as critiques of capitalism. Arguing that capitalism is the economic structural context for Black people's experiences of subordination, I examine how engagement with capitalism interacts with categories of theological sources, understandings of sin, and the meaning of salvation. Comparing classic Black and womanist theologians with Cornel West's model of democratic socialism, I concl…
The Removal Of Donor Anonymity in The UK
From 1 April 2005, UK law was changed to allow children born through gamete donation to access identifying details of the donor. The decision to abolish donor anonymity was strongly influenced by a discourse that asserted the 'child's right-to-know' their genetic origins. Under the current regulation, if would-be parents want to receive treatment in the UK, they have no option but to use gametes/embryos from identifiable donors. For a majority, t…
