  • A major shift in U.S. land development avoids significant losses in forest and agricultural land

    Open Access•Daniel P Bigelow, David J Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Land development, which typically results from the conversion of lands previously in agricultural and forest uses, is one of the most fundamental ways in which humans impact the natural environment. We study the remarkable decline in land development rates across the conterminous United States over the period 2000–2015, which occurred after development rates had grown rapidly over the last two decades of the 20th century. Despite relatively const…

  • Projected land-use change impacts on ecosystem services in the United States

    Open Access•John J Lawler, David J Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2014

Significance Land-use change affects the provision of ecosystem services and wildlife habitat. We project land-use change from 2001 to 2051 for the contiguous United States under two scenarios reflecting continuation of 1990s trends and high crop demand more reflective of the recent past. These scenarios result in large differences in land-use trajectories that generate increases in carbon storage, timber production, food production from increase…

  • Managing Wild Resources

    Open Access•Brian Robinson, Brian E Robinson et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2013•Citada por: 7•Referências: 8

Managing harvests from natural resource systems is often seen as necessary to recover resource rent, that is, for wise and sustainable use. This paper develops a method to estimate resource rent recovery for a class of nontimber forest products and, using a unique dataset on the harvest of wild mushrooms in southwestern China, we empirically estimate this in open access, common access, and privately managed forests. We show that villages that lac…

  • Efficiency of incentives to jointly increase carbon sequestration and species conservation on a landscape

Open Access•Erik Nelson, Stephen Polasky et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2008

We develop an integrated model to predict private land-use decisions in response to policy incentives designed to increase the provision of carbon sequestration and species conservation across heterogeneous landscapes. Using data from the Willamette Basin, Oregon, we compare the provision of carbon sequestration and species conservation under five simple policies that offer payments for conservation. We evaluate policy performance compared with t…

  • NGOs, Donors, and the State in Bangladesh

    Open Access•D Lewis, David J Lewis•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1997•Citada por: 7•Referências: 3

This article examines nongovernmental organization (NGO) partnership issues in the light of a 1996 World Bank report that seeks to promote a greater level of partnership between government and NGOs. The first part of the article briefly reviews Bangladesh's now well-known NGO sector. The continuing status of independent Bangladesh as a major recipient of international aid has created an environment in which the growth of most private voluntary de…
