  • Marine resource projects for rural economic development policies in Chile: Marine user rights and disruption costs

Open Access•Heidi J Albers, Cuauhtémoc Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2026

Governments offer resource user rights, such as individual and collective agricultural land rights, fishing quotas, and territorial user rights in marine activities, to induce economic development and efficient resource use. Yet, user rights and improved incomes do not always lead to project uptake, as in rural-rural migration. Marine user rights may differ from land tenure rights, especially when rights are individual or collective. We explore h…

  • Precursors of environmental compliance in a transitional economy: An empirical investigation of monitoring and enforcement in Chile

Open Access•Adolfo A Uribe Poblete, Cuauhtémoc Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2026

We study monitoring and enforcement for environmental compliance in the context of a transitional economy. We estimate the factors correlated with inspections carried out by the Chilean Superintendence of Environment, the imposition of fines to detected violators and the compliance behaviour of regulated facilities. The analysis considers 6,670 facilities from different economic sectors between 2013 and 2019. We find evidence of targeted monitori…

Open Access•Tai Do, Carlos Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•American Behavioral Scientist•2026•References: 65

A measure of graduate student sense of belonging with adequate psychometric properties was established. We conducted secondary analysis using data from the 2021 Graduate Student Experiences at Research Universities Survey and found evidence supporting the underlying factor structure of sense of belonging as a single latent trait among 12 rating scale items. Furthermore, there was weak to strong evidence that sense of belonging was associated with…

    Open Access•Carlos Chávez•ARTICLE•Revista de Economia Contemporânea•2023•References: 35

This study analyzes the dynamic effects of undervaluation on the economic growth per capita of Latin American countries from 1980 to 2018. To estimate these effects, a panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model was used with the System GMM as its estimator. The undervaluation variable is created from different measures of real exchange rates. In addition, various measures of GDP per capita were used to calculate economic growth per capita. Macroeco…

  • Lessons from a pilot program to induce stove replacements in Chile: Design, implementation and evaluation

Open Access•Walter Gómez, Cuauhtémoc Chávez et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2017

We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of a subsidy program to introduce cleaner and more efficient household wood combustion technologies. The program was conducted in the city of Temuco, one of the most polluted cities in southern Chile, as a pilot study to design a new national stove replacement initiative for pollution control. In this city, around 90% of the total emissions of suspended particulate matter is caused by househol…
