Open Access•Sofia Lampropoulou, Korina Giaxoglou et al.•ARTICLE•Critical Discourse Studies•2025•Referências: 32

This study explores positive migrant storytelling in non-governmental organizations' advocacy campaigns. We focus on the practices and implications of leveraging storytelling towards charity organizations' institutional goals. Drawing upon critical discourse studies and narrative studies, we propose a critical storytelling approach that pays attention to the specific nature of storytelling as a discourse practice in itself. We focus on a UNHCR hu…

  • Taking a break from social media

    Open Access•Tereza Spilioti, Korina Giaxoglou et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pragmatics•2024•Citada por: 3•Referências: 19

Despite the continued drive for sharing the self online, social media users have been increasingly orienting to practices of ‘not sharing’ in the context of wider debates about digital wellbeing. In this article, we investigate how celebrities manage and navigate online sharing. We focus on media ideologies in social media posts that announce the celebrities' decision to ‘take a break’, i.e. to stop posting and/or engaging with social media conte…

  • Mobilizing Stories of Illness in Digital Contexts

    Korina Giaxoglou, Κορίνα Γιαξόγλου•ARTICLE•Poetics Today•2022•Referências: 35

Illness stories have been celebrated as a resource for giving patients voice from the active position of the wounded storyteller. The proliferating research on illness stories, however, has often reproduced a reductionist approach to narrative as a window to subjective views and experiences based on a largely underdeveloped and essentialized notion of voice. Critics of the over-celebration of narrative have called for caution toward the use of pe…

  • Mobilizing Grief and Remembrance with and for Networked Publics

Open Access•Korina Giaxoglou, Κορίνα Γιαξόγλου•ARTICLE•European Journal of Life Writing•2020

The past decade has seen an intense mobilization of grief and remembrance on social media linked to the injunction to inscribe, share, and curate life and death in the here-and-now. This article navigates the heterogeneity of these practices, using the term hyper-mourning to point both to the conditioning of mourning by the affordances of hyper-connectivity and to debates around these emerging forms of mourning as being emotionally hyperbolic and…

  • Taboo or Not Taboo

Open Access•Ylva Hård Af Segerstad, Jo Bell et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2020

The notion that ‘death is a taboo’ pervades private, public and academic discourses around death, dying and bereavement in contemporary Western societies. The rise of digital media within the last decades further complicates the appreciation of the stance that death is a taboo, given the increased opportunities afforded in social media environments for embracing death, fostering new intimacies with strangers and semi-strangers but also for turnin…

  • Mediatization of Emotion on Social Media

This article provides the theoretical background for this Special Issue which explores the mediatization of emotion on social media as attested in different digital mourning practices. The overview discusses the affective and emotional turn alongside the mediatic turn in relation to key trends and foci in the study of affect/emotion. Our discussion points to a shift in conceptualizations of affect/emotion from mediated to mediatized practice, emb…
