A century of nitrogen dynamics in agricultural watersheds of Denmark
Intensive agriculture has been linked to increased nitrogen loads and adverse effects on downstream aquatic ecosystems. Sustained large net nitrogen surpluses have been shown in several contexts to form legacies in soil or waters, which delay the effects of reduction measures. In this study, detailed land use and agricultural statistics were used to reconstruct the annual nitrogen surpluses in three agriculture-dominated watersheds of Denmark (60…

Some theoretical problems of institutional economic history
Douglass C. North's theory of institutional economic history provides, so far, the most elaborate attempt at a unified theory explaining long-run economic performance. This paper undertakes a critical examination of North's theory, by examining its elements, structure, meaning, operation, dynamics and — briefly — some possible developments. Since the theory, as yet, is not sufficiently formalized such an approach meets with great difficulties. Th…

Markets and democracy: Participation, accountability and efficiency
The market does not spontaneously generate democratic or participatory economic institutions. This book asks whether a modern, efficient economy can be rendered democratically accountable and, if so, what strategic changes might be required to regulate the market-mediated interaction of economic agents. The contributors bring contemporary microeconomic theory to bear on a range of related issues, including the relationship between democratic firm…

The rise and economic behaviour of medieval craft guilds an economic-theoretical interpretation
The city-based craft guild organization was the specific form of pre-capitalist industrial organization in Western Europe from the 12th century up to the middle of the 19th century, when the craft guilds were abolished with the introduction of free trade. From the late Middle Ages and more and more during the 16th to the 18th centuries domestic industries, located in the countryside, grew strongly together with the putting-out system founded on d…

Trade unions in the Swedish sawmills
Although the sawmill industry occupied a strategic position during the industrialisation of Sweden, it has on the whole been the subject of remarkably little research. A number of monographs by Harald Wiik, Ernst Söderlund, Karl-Gusraf Hildebrand, Thore Hammarland and the present reviewer deal with production, exports, working conditions and trade unions, but special studies have been rare. Within the last few years this has begun to change, resu…
