  • Public Goods Provision and Democratic Legitimacy in Latin America

    Open Access•Andrés A Acuña-Duarte, Javier León Aravena et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2026

This cross‐country study assesses the impact of citizen satisfaction with the provision of local and political public goods on democratic legitimacy in Latin America. We introduce a composite index to capture citizens' perceptions of democratic legitimacy, incorporating both material and diffuse dimensions. Using individual‐ and cohort‐level data from five waves of the AmericasBarometer survey, we estimate pooled linear regression and fixed‐effec…

  • Satisfaction with public goods provision and citizen preferences for institutional changes

    Open Access•Andrés A Acuña-Duarte, Javier León Aravena et al.•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2024

We argue that a deficient provision of public goods may influence citizen satisfaction with the status quo, thereby encouraging demands for institutional changes. We formalize and test this relationship using prior data related to the recent constitutional process carried out in Chile to replace its dictatorship‐era constitution. Individual‐level data from the Chile 2016/17 AmericasBarometer survey are used to estimate ordered and multinomial pro…

  • Travel Cost on Election Day and Voter-Turnout in Chile

    Open Access•Andrés A Acuña-Duarte, César Salazar et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2024

An i-voting system may promote electoral participation by reducing travel cost and time to polling places, especially among youth who are more accustomed to technological changes. We study the linkage between travel costs on election day and voter turnout by comparing past electoral participation with stated voting behavior in a hypothetical i-voting system. We believe that the link between transportation costs, i-voting, and voter-turnout emerge…

  • Environmental educational programs in Chile

César Salazar, Mauricio Leiva et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Education Research•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Tackling environmental problems is one of the main policy challenges facing governments. The process of forming attitudes starts at a young age, and is mostly shaped by education. Participation in pro-environmental initiatives at schools is mainly voluntary. Local governments can play an important role as the institution that links communities with the environment. In this paper, we examine the role of local governments/municipalities on school p…

  • Conditioning Factors for Re-election and Incumbency Advantage after a Natural Disaster

Andrés A Acuña-Duarte, César Salazar et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2021

Since the public assessment of political leadership is more evident during crisis events, natural disasters have become a plausible explanation for electoral outcomes and public support. This imposes a prominent challenge for developing countries, which are less prepared to deal with catastrophes. This paper proposes a theoretical and an empirical approach to evaluate the unrestricted and conditional impact of natural disasters on the continuity …

  • The impact of collective use rights on share contracts

    Open Access•César Salazar, Jorge Dresdner•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2020

Share contracts are the dominant remuneration system in artisanal fisheries. Introducing regulations based on collective use rights may affect the way profits are distributed. The literature on the effect of regulatory reform on factor income distribution, however, is scarce. In this paper, we look at differences in the implementation of the Extractive Artisanal Regime in Chilean hake artisanal fisheries to test its effect on share contracts. We …

  • A framework for selecting and designing policies to reduce marine plastic pollution in developing countries

    Open Access•Francisco Alpizar, Fredrik Carlsson et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 7

The polluting of marine ecosystems with plastics is both a global and a local problem with potentially severe consequences for wildlife, economic activity, and human health. It is a problem that originates in countries’ inability to adequately manage the growing flow of waste. We use an impact pathway framework to trace the flow of plastics through the socio-ecological system and identify the role of specific policy instruments in achieving behav…

  • Weather Shocks and Spatial Market Efficiency

César Salazar, Hailemariam Ayalew et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2019

The aim of this paper is to study the association between weather shocks (droughts and floods) and agricultural market performance in Mozambique. To do so, we employ a dyadic regression analysis on monthly maize prices, transport costs, and spatial identification of markets as well as droughts and flooded areas. Our estimates show that, while a drought reduces price differences between markets, price dispersion increases during flood periods, an …

  • Weather shocks and cropland decisions in rural Mozambique

    Open Access•César Salazar, César Salazar-Espinoza et al.•ARTICLE•Food Policy•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Economic development in low income settings is often associated with an expansion of higher-value agricultural activities. Since these activities often bring new risks, an understanding of cropland decisions and how these interact with shocks is valuable. This paper uses data from Mozambique to examine the effect of weather shocks on cropland decisions. We account for the bounded nature of land shares and estimate a Pooled Fractional Probit model…
