  • Evidence of destructive debris flows at (pre-) Hispanic Cayambe settlements, Ecuador

    Open Access•Francisco J Vasconez, Pablo Samaniego et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2022

In Ecuador, a country with numerous potentially active volcanoes, recurrent large earthquakes, and regular climate-related events, it is surmised that phenomena such as debris flows have affected pre-Hispanic populations since their settlement in ∼5000 cal BC. Here, using a multidisciplinary approach, we studied the most recent debris flow events that affected the Cayambe city area, located 15 km west of the active glacier-clad Cayambe volcano. B…

  • Changes in the vegetation and water cycle of the Ecuadorian páramo during the last 5000 years

    Open Access•Marie-Pierre Ledru, Olga Aquino-Alfonso et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 9

We analyzed changes in the long-term vegetation cover and in fire activity over the past 5000 years in the Ecuadorian páramo using a sediment core from Papallacta (Ecuador). The chronology is constrained by three tephra layers and 32 AMS 14 C ages, and 168 samples yielded a high-resolution record of environmental changes. We estimated the upslope wind convectivity as the ratio between pollen transported from the Andean cloud forest and Poaceae po…

  • Commercial and biophysical deficits in South America, 1990–2013

  • Efficiency of hospital cholera treatment in Ecuador

Open Access•Germán Creamer, Germán G Creamer et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Panamericana de Salud…•1999

This study analyzed the efficiency of cholera treatment in three hospitals representative of the Ecuadorian public health system in order to provide hospital directors and administrators and health service policy-makers with information to plan responses to future epidemics and to reduce the costs of cholera treatment in general. For the study, total and excess cholera treatment costs were calculated using hospital files and statistics and an in-…

  • Le volcan Cayambe (Équateur)

Open Access•Michel Monzier, Pablo Samaniego et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin de l’Institut français…•1996

Cayambe volcano (Ecuador): eruptive activity during the last 5,000 years and potential hazards The study of recent products emitted by dacite domes located on the upper flanks of Cayambe volcano, situated 60 km to the NE of Quito, yields four pyroclastic units of block and ash flows, surges and associated lahars. The youngest unit was erupted about 360 years BP. Moreover, the identification of numerous airfall deposits (ash and lapilli) in a peat…
