New housing construction and market signals in urban China: A tale of 35 metropolitan areas
Bayesian spatiotemporal forecasting and mapping of Covid‐19 risk with application to West Java Province, Indonesia
The coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) has spread rapidly to multiple countries including Indonesia. Mapping its spatiotemporal pattern and forecasting (small area) outbreaks are crucial for containment and mitigation strategies. Hence, we introduce a parsimonious space–time model of new infections that yields accurate forecasts but only requires information regarding the number of incidences and population size per geographical unit and time period.…
Identifying Spatiotemporal Clusters by Means of Agglomerative Hierarchical Clustering and Bayesian Regression Analysis with Spatiotemporally Varying Coefficients: Methodology and Application to Dengue…
Dengue disease has serious health and socioeconomic consequences. Preventive actions are needed to avoid outbreaks. Bayesian spatiotemporal models with conditional autoregressive (CAR) and random walk (RW) priors are two common smoothing approaches used in disease mapping to develop early warning systems and action plans. However, this approach can lead to over‐smoothing, such that discontinuities in the risk surface are “averaged” out. Moreover,…
Perceived Risk of Genetically Modified Foods Among Residents in Xi’an, China: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
This paper applies a structural equation modeling approach to study the formation of consumers' perceived health risk of genetically modified (GM) foods based on a cross-sectional dataset of 508 consumers in Xi'an, China. The results indicate a high percentage of respondents who believe that GM foods might threaten human health. The estimated structural equation model shows that males, older people, respondents with higher income, those with bett…
Determinants of residential satisfaction in urban China: A multi-group structural equation analysis
Based on the 2006 wave of the China General Social Survey, this paper analyses interregional disparities in residential satisfaction in urban China. It also explores whether the determinants vary across the coastal, central and inland regions by means of a multi-group structural equation model (SEM). We find that residential satisfaction in the coastal region is lower than in the central and inland regions. Housing quality, home ownership, commun…
Perception of Air Pollution in the Jinchuan Mining Area, China: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
Studies on the perception of air pollution in China are very limited. The aim of this paper is to help to fill this gap by analyzing a cross-sectional dataset of 759 residents of the Jinchuan mining area, Gansu Province, China. The estimations suggest that perception of air pollution is two-dimensional. The first dimension is the perceived intensity of air pollution and the second is the perceived hazardousness of the pollutants. Both dimensions …

The Relationships between Individualism, Nationalism, Ethnocentrism, and Authoritarianism in Flanders: A Continuous Time-Structural Equation Modeling Approach
This article analyzes the relationships among nationalism (N), individualism (I), ethnocentrism (E), and authoritarianism (A) in continuous time (CT), estimated as a structural equation model. The analysis is based on the General Election Study for Flanders, Belgium, for 1991, 1995, and 1999. We find reciprocal effects between A and E and between E and I as well as a unidirectional effect from A on I. We furthermore find relatively small, but sig…

Estimation of Autoregressive Models with Two Types of Weak Spatial Dependence by Means of the W-Based and the Latent Variables Approach: Evidence from Monte Carlo Simulations
We evaluate by means of Monte Carlo simulations the W-based spatial autoregressive model and the structural equation model with latent variables (SEM) to handle two types of simultaneously occurring weak spatial dependence: (i) spillover from a hotspot, and (iia) spillover from first-order, queen contiguous neighbours, (iib) inverse-distance-related spatial units, (iic) the first three nearest neighbours. Although it is possible to account for se…

Reply to Steele & Ferrer: Modeling Oscillation, Approximately or Exactly
This article addresses modeling oscillation in continuous time. It criticizes Steele and Ferrer's article “Latent Differential Equation Modeling of Self-Regulatory and Coregulatory Affective Processes” (2011), particularly the approximate estimation procedure applied. This procedure is the latent version of the local linear approximation procedure based on Boker (2001) Boker, S. M. 2001. “Differential structural equation modeling of intraindividu…
How to Get Rid of W: A Latent Variables Approach to Modelling Spatially Lagged Variables
In this paper we propose a structural equation model (SEM) with latent variables to model spatial dependence. Rather than using the spatial weights matrix W, we propose to use latent variables to represent spatial dependence and spillover effects, of which the observed spatially lagged variables are indicators. This approach allows us to incorporate and test more information on spatial dependence and offers more flexibility than the representatio…

Environmental policy in the European Union: Community competence vs member state competence
In the environmental federalism literature it is argued that the optimal level of environmental quality varies widely across jurisdictions and that welfare losses associated with enforcing a harmonised uniform standard is quite large. Greater leeway for tailoring environmental standards to local circumstances are therefore in order. In this paper Member States’ possibilities to implement a higher level of environmental protection than the harmoni…

Regional Inequality in the Provision of Health Care in Spain
Whereas studies on regional inequality tend to focus on income disparities, we investigate regional inequality in Spain with respect to health facilities. In this study we examine trends in regional inequality over the period 1964 to 1991 during which fundamental changes in health policies were implemented. We follow a multidimensional approach in the sense that several indicators of health facilities are considered. Regional inequality is measur…
A Linear Structural Equation Approach to Cross-Sectional Models with Lagged Variables
Lagged variables play an important role in cross-sectional models in geography and regional sciences. This paper starts with an overview of the situations in which they may be required. Lagged variables also pose serious problems from a statistical point of view: multicollinearity and the determination of the length of the lag. Some common approaches to these two problems are discussed and evaluated. As an alternative a linear structural equation…
