  • Willingness to pay for attributes of Templestay and implications on marginal utility of different meditation forms

    Open Access•Se-Hyuk Kim, James W Mjelde et al.•ARTICLE•Tourism Economics•2023

Templestays are a form of cultural tourism in which participants visit a Buddhist temple to experience their culture. Using a choice experiment, the marginal willingness to pay (MWTP) is estimated for various attributes of Templestay programs of location, accommodations, and type of meditation. Respondents are willing to pay a premium for private accommodations and to experience the natural mountain settings over an urban setting. The MWTP varies…

  • Dynamical response of atmospheric circulation to below-normal East Sea sea surface temperatures associated with heavy snowfall in eastern Korea

Open Access•Tae-Kyun Kim, Taekyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

Prior studies have shown that above-normal sea surface temperatures (SSTs) enhance snowfall over Korea. Here, we show that heavy snow is also associated with below-normal East Sea SSTs, and we investigate the dynamical response of the atmosphere to this surface condition using observations and numerical modeling. The results indicate that anomalous southeasterly/easterly winds are induced by heavy snowfall-related cold SST anomalies, and conseque…

  • Willingness-to-pay for whale tour attributes using a choice experiment

Choong-Ki Lee, James W Mjelde et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism…•2019•Cited by: 1

Individual’s preferences for various whale tour attributes along with estimates of their willingness-to-pay (WTP) for these attributes are estimated using a choice experiment. Respondents prefer tours with increased interactive activities: tours with a higher probability of seeing whales, tours that provide interpretative services and tours that provide access to the whale museum and whale cultural village. WTP for changes in the probability of s…

  • Estimating Willingness to Pay for the Development of a Peace Park Using CVM

James W Mjelde, Hyesun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2017•Cited by: 1

Conflicts remain an integral part in shaping the world. Tensions on the Korean Peninsula are no exceptions. The Korean DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) World Peace Park has been proposed to help obtain peace by erasing the memories of war and creating new beginnings of trust, cooperation, and unity on the Korean Peninsula. With their ties to geographical space and conflict, peace park research provides an excellent platform for both activism and research…

  • The Carryover Effect of Newspaper Reports on a Mega Event

    Tae-Kyun Kim, Tae‐Kyun Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Journal of Tourism…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This study identifies variables affecting daily attendance at the 2012 Expo Yeosu, Korea, emphasizing the role the newspapers and promotions played during the Expo. A polynomial distributed lag model is estimated to determine the factors influencing daily attendance at the Expo. Results indicate that the variables of Saturday and first and second days of holidays, peak vacation season, media, and promotions have a significant positive effect on t…
