Anti-mirativity in Romance
The paper discusses four cognate adverbial particles in Camuno, Italian,Romanian, and Spanish. These are modal particles that mark the content of a proposition as trivial, obvious, or already part of the common ground. The semantic import of the particles is modeled by reversing a common treatment of scalar adverbs like even: the particles indicate that the hosting proposition is the most likely with respect to the set of its focus alternatives. …
Wh- interrogatives in Camuno
This study examines wh-interrogatives in Camuno, an endangered Northern Italian dialect. While similar constructions have been addressed in the literature, our analysis offers a novel contribution by exploring successive-cyclicity, formal feature checking, and the interactions with the LF and PF interfaces. We propose that wh-interrogatives in Camuno form A-bar chains, which spell out distinct formal features at the phase edges. Furthermore, we a…
Biased interrogatives in Camuno
This article discusses the properties of interrogative structures biased in the set of their possible answers by the particle po in Camuno. In declarative structures, po signals that according to the speaker, a proposition p is surprisingly controversial in the utterance world w . In interrogative structures, the same particle identifies the only subset of 〚 p 〛 f [\kern-2pt[ {p]\kern-2pt] }^{f} , the set of focus alternatives to p , that can sat…
Services trade policy and industry performance in African economies
This paper assesses the potential impacts of services trade liberalisation for a sample of African countries. The focus is on the relationship between labour productivity of manufacturing sectors and two types of services trade‐related policies – restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) in services and restrictions on international payments for invisibles. The analysis takes into account differences across manufacturing sectors in the inte…
Italian poi as a trigger of expressive presupposition
This paper proposes an analysis of the discourseparticle (DiP) poi in the Italian as spoken in Vallecamonica, in the north of the country. The data discussed here show that the informal characterizations provided in the literature (e.g., Cognola & Cruschina 2021) are superfluous to capture the meanings of poi described in the paper. The import of the particle is, in fact, one of uncontroversiality and factuality, two concepts related to the notio…
Trade policy responses to the Covid‐19 pandemic crisis
This paper presents new high‐frequency data on trade policy changes targeting medical and food products since the beginning of the COVID‐19 pandemic, documenting how countries used trade policy instruments in response to the health crisis on a week‐by‐week basis. The data set reveals a rapid increase in trade policy activism in February and March 2020 in tandem with the rise in COVID‐19 cases but also uncovers extensive heterogeneity across count…
Voluntary standards and the SDGs
To strengthen global sustainability governance, academics and policymakers have called for a better integration of private governance with public policy instruments. Surprisingly, however, systematic research on the state of such public-private complementarities in the field of sustainable development is lacking. With a focus on voluntary sustainability standards and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, this article address…
Stakeholder Preferences and Priorities for the Next WTO Director General
This paper reports on the results of an expert survey to solicit views on what WTO members and the international trade community consider the most important attributes of the Director‐General of the WTO and the substantive policy and institutional reform priorities confronting the WTO. The results suggest strong support for a leader with managerial and political experience, and a professional network that spans international organizations, major …
Asymmetric cultural proximity and greenfield foreign direct investment
This paper studies bilateral cultural preferences as an asymmetric dimension of cultural proximity and estimates their effect on greenfield foreign direct investment ( FDI ). We derive a gravity equation of FDI and test simultaneously the impact of both (a) the preferences of investing countries for recipients' culture and (b) recipients' preferences for the culture in the investing economies. While the role of investors' preferences can be ratio…

EU Trade and Non‐trade Objectives
EU trade policy increasingly focuses on the achievement of non‐trade policy objectives (NTPOs) such as the promotion of human rights or environmental protection, motivating research on the political economy determinants and effectiveness of linking trade policy and NTPOs. This research reports selected findings from a new expert survey of stakeholder perceptions of trade–NTPO linkages. These suggest that the views of EU institutions align with th…
Missing the Bigger Picture
Transparency in transnational governance
The rise of “new” transnational governance has intensified debates about a lack of accountability in global politics. Reviewing the mechanisms through which transparency can foster accountability beyond the state, this article explores the determinants of information disclosure in the field of transnational sustainability governance. Examining the institutional design of 113 voluntary sustainability programs, we find a positive correlation betwee…
Services policy reform and manufacturing employment
Policy reforms targeting the services sectors are a neglected dimension of the process of structural transformation and economic development. The effects of such reforms on employment across industries as a function of their use of services as intermediate inputs are theoretically ambiguous and remain largely understudied. This paper uses sector‐level data for 24 transition economies for the 1990–2012 period to assess the impacts of services poli…
